Covington Woman's Club Held Its
Annual Business Meeting, Tuesday
The Covington Woman's Club
held its annual business meeting
in the Woman’s Club Building on
Tuesday afternoon.
The club room was most attrac
tive with arrangements of sweet
peas, roses and other spring
flowers.
The meeting was called to order
by the president, Mrs. L. A. Pat
rick.
Miss Leila Gardner led the devo
tional. This was followed by the
song, “America, the Beautiful.”
The usual monthly reports from
officers and chairmen were given.
The finance committee reported
that the Club is saving Gold Bond
Stamp coupons and Texize wrap
pers to get some equipment for
khe kitchen.
The chairman of Committee on
Constitution and by-laws asked that
the following change be made—
that instead of the Club giving a
book to the Library at the death of
a club member, a donation of
83.00 be sent to Tallulah Falls.
The Club voted unanimously to
make this change.
The Club will sponsor a cake sale

Convention program, the beauty of
Jekyll Island and the hospitality of
the Clubs of that district.

with a pink cloth and centered with

"MISS NEWTON COUNTY 1961" Ann Rainey of Emory-
At-Oxford, will represent the county in the Miss Georgia
Contest during the weekend at Columbus, Ga. The winner
of the Miss Georgia title will be eligible for the Miss America
title at Atlantic City in September. The Newton County con
test is sponsored by the Newton County Junior Chamber of
Commerce.

The W. S. C. S. of Allen Memo
rial Church in Oxford held a brief
business session, prior to the revi
val service in the church school
building on May 2, 1961.
Following the opening prayer by
Mrs. E. J. Brown, the treasurer
gave the monthly report on finan
ces. Due to the limited time, the
minutes of the April meeting were
omitted.
The following announcements of
interest were made:
The District Annual meeting is
to be held in Snellville on May 12,
and the Officers Training Day will
take place in Porterdale on Sun
day, May 21 from 2:30 to 4:30 o’-
clock. At the annual meeting of
the Womans’ Society held recently
in Thomaston, the Oxford Society
received honors on its scrapbook.
Six awards in all were bestowed
the Decatur-Oxford District.
The report of the nominating com
mittee gave the following slate of
officers for the new conference

in the six o’clock, double ring
nuptials.
The arrangement of the al
tar, before which the couple
exchanged their vows, was of
photenia foliage and blossoms,
in a copper washed pewter urn.
Cornelius Collins served as
his father’s best man.
The bride wore a navy sheer
costume, with scooped neck
line, and touches of white
trim; with which she wore
white accessories and a white
carnation corsage.
Mr. and Mrs. Collins will
make their home in Covington,
at 722 Webster Street.

Among Visitors
LaGrange College
A number of Covington peo
ple were visitors to LaGrange
College Saturday, May 6, for
the annual May Day activities.
During their visit to the co
educational, liberal arts col
lege they saw several student
activities, inspected campus fa
cilities and were guests at the
traditional May Day pageant.
Those attending the cam
pus event were the Rev. Her
bert Owen of Route Two; Mr.
and Mrs. Jim Baker and Mr.
and Mrs. Edwin Brown, all of
Oxford, and Mr. and Mrs. F.
S. Jones of Mansfield.
Rev. Owen and Mr. Baker
are former students at La-
Grange; Mr. Brown is a field
representative of the college;
and Mr. and Mrs. Jones’ daugh
ter, Jackie, danced in the May
Day Pageant.
Wesleyan Service Guild Held Annual
Covered Dish Supper, Pledge Service
The Wesleyan Service Guild of
the First Methodist Church held
their May meeting on Tuesday,
May 2nd at the church. This
meeting was the annual covered
dish supper and pledge service.
After a delicious supper, the
J ‘esident, Mrs. Mel Waggoner, call
ed the meeting to order. Mrs.
Robert Christian was in charge of
the devotional, entitled, ‘Our
Three-Fold Pledge.” The song,
“Take My Life and Let It Be”
was sung by the members, after
which Mrs. Christian gave a prayer
Mrs. Willie Campbell was in
charge of the program. She was
assisted by Mrs. Ruth Taylor,
Mrs. Homer Sharp and Mrs. Fred
Harwell. While the Guild sang,
“Living For Jesus” they made
their pledge cards for the coming
year and placed them on the devo
tional table. The ceremony was
very impressive.

New Orleans Visitor At Morning Coffee
The attractive home of the
Lee Stephensons was the scene
of a delightful contribution to
the current social calendar of
events, when she compliment
ed Mrs. Robert Stephenson of
New Orleans, at a morning
coffee on Wednesday.
Focal point of the reception
hall was a mantel arrangement
of yellow honeysuckle and le
mon lilies, in an antique china
pitcher with a smaller arrange
ment of yellow pansies in a
pansy bowl. Reflecting the same
color were lemon lilies, arrang
ed with deodara cedar sprays
in a silver basket.
A cabinet arrangement of
lemon lilies was also used to
advantage in the music room;
and white rosebuds, combined
with podocarpus in a cutglass
container lent floral interest in
the living room.
The refreshment table, over

secretary and treasury reports. All
of the end of the year reports were
given. Mrs. Sharp, our co-ordina
tor, praised the Guild for their
year’s accomplishments. Mrs.
Campbell made the nominating
committee report which will be
the same next year as they were
the past year.
It was moved and seconded that
we send $2.00 to the Catherine
Ennis Fund. This will be made
up by a collection.
Mrs. Waggoner announced that
the Decatur-Oxford District Ban
quet of the Guild will be held on
May 20th at Monroe. Also, that
there will be a Training School in
Clarkston on the 4th Sunday in
June.
Miss Carolyn Osborn gave a re
port on the meeting held at
Stone Mountain.
It was announced that the June
meeting would be held at the
church with Misses Ollie and
piece of pink and crimson roses
in a crystal container. Silver
trays of open face, and other
dainty sandwiches, and home
baked confections; silver bowls
of party dips, and silver com
potes of toasted nuts perfected
the appointments. Mrs. Jordan
Callaway, who wore a chic two
piece costume in black; and
Mrs. Lamar Callaway, wearing
a cameo pink ensemble in
shantung poured coffee.
Mrs. E. E. Callaway assisted
in greeting guests, and wore a
textured linen black sheath,
with tailored neckline, greeted
guests. Mrs. Donald Stephen
son, who also assisted in en
tertaining, was attired in mid
night blue shantung.
Mrs. Stephenson, the honoree,
chose for the occasion which
assembled some forty local
friends, a two piece shantung
suit in mint green. The hos
tess wore a forest green casual
dress in real silk.

I would like to take this op
portunity to thank all my
friends and neighbors for the
flowers, gifts, visits, calls and
prayers and every act of kind
ness while I was in the hospital
and upon my return home.
Also, to the doctors and
nurses and everyone concerned
Pauline Smith and Mrs. Clyde
Castleberry as hostesses.
The meeting was adjourned with
a prayer by Mrs. Glenn Jones.
