Heard-Mixon Home Demonstration Club
Held Its May Meeting on Thursday
The Heard Mixon Home De
monstration club held its re
gular monthly meeting at the
Club House on May 4, with 13
members.
Mrs. Billy Aiken, president,
failed the meeting to order.
Mrs. Hugh Aiken called the
roll and read the minutes. She
also gave the treasury report
and we have a good bank bal
ance.
Mrs. Fred Martin had the de
votional, which was very in
teresting and appropriate as
she referred to flowers several
times.
Mrs. E. M. McCart was elect
ed to represent the club at the
State Home Demonstration
Conference to be held at Rock
Eagle June 6-9.
Mrs. Malone gave us some
instructions for making Christ
mas gifts, etc. Mrs. Malone told
us of the need at the Milledge
ville State Hospital of cad
dies for use of the patients and
most of the members said they
would make some.
We had our flower show on
May 4 at the Club House and

Mrs. Grady Jones won the
sweepstakes in the Horticul
ture Division and Mrs. Roy
Aiken was runner - up. Mrs.
Roy Aiken won the Award of
Merit for the outstanding flow
er in the Horticulture Division.
Mrs. Grady Jones won the Tri-
Color ribbon in the Artistic
Division, also the Award of
Distinction. The judges were
Mrs. Bill Vaughn. Mrs. Tom
Freeman and Mrs. Frank Stone.
Delicious refreshments, con
sisting of party sandwiches,
crackers, cake and punch, were
served by the hostesses, Mrs.
Billy Aiken and Mrs. Ira
Dickerson.

May 3, at which Mr. Smith
showed us how to make dried
arrangements.

evening, May 6, by Miss Kathie
Sherard of Atlanta. The show

Miss Sherard’s grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Nash on
Floyd Street. Assisting the hos
tess in entertaining was her
mother, Mrs. Robert Sherard,
sister Miss Susan Sherard, and
grandmother Mrs. Nash.

made for May. Mrs. Herman
Wilbanks’ group will visit a
child and present a sunshine
box to cheer him.

Miss Stephanie Ginn, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Ginn,
of Covington, was chosen as
first place winner in the
“Beauty” section of the re
cently released Emory-at-Ox
ford yearbook. Because of her
selection Miss Ginn earned the
title of “Miss MEMORY 1961”
and is featured in a full - page
picture.
A member of the freshman
class at Emory-at-Oxford, Miss
Ginn is active in extracurricu
lar activities. She was elected
to membership in Sigma Tau
Sigma (honorary Social Stud
ies Society). She is a graduate
of Newton High School and a
member of the First Baptist
Church, Covington.
Ernest Rogers, of Atlanta,
was the final judge for the
beauty section. Others appear

The Covington Book Club
met Monday afternoon, May 3,
at the home of Mrs. Donald
Stephenson with 16 members
present. Mrs. Donald Stephen
son. president, welcomed Miss
Julia Aiken, Mrs. Mamie Col
lier and Mrs. Vera Langbough,
club guests.
Mrs. E. B. Rogers reviewed
the Book, “The Affluent So
ciety”, by John Kenneth Gal
braith. Mr. Galbraith, a native
Canadian, is ambassador to In
dia and advisor in the Kennedy
Covington Garden Club Met Wed.
At Jackson Lake Home Mrs. Gibson
The Covington Garden Club
met on May 3 at the home of
Mrs. L. C. Gibson on Jackson
Lake with Mrs. S. A. Ginn and
Mrs. J. F. Touchstone as co
hostesses.
The meeting was called to
order by the president, Mrs.
R. P. Campbell. Mrs. Spence
Ramsey gave the devotional af
ter which the roll call and min
utes were read by Mrs. A. D.
Jordan. Reports from commit
tees and treasurer’s report were
called for by Mrs. Campbell.
A very interesting report of
the State Garden Club con
vention held in Savannah was
given by Mrs. Campbell.
Delicious refreshments were
served by the committee.
Members receiving ribbons
for arrangements were: Mrs. L.
C. Gibson, 2 blue and Mrs. Leo
Mallard, 1 blue. There was a
variety of spring horticulture
with many blue ribbons.
