Social Security
Benefits Are
Now Varied
If you have reached retire
ment age (65 for men and 62
for women) and have never in
quired about social security
benefits because you are still
working you should talk to a
social security representative
right away, Mr. Joseph R. Mur*
phy, Manager of the Atlanta
District Office, advises.
Because of a 1960 change in
the law, a great number of
older people whose earnings
were high enough to keep them
from collecting social security
benefits, will now be able to re
ceive some benefits during the
year.
Up until this year, social se
curity beneficiaries who earned
more than SI2OO in a year lost
one month’s social security
benefits for each SBO of earn
ings in excess of S2OO. Under
the new law only $1 in bene
fits is withheld for each $2 of
ings in excess of SI2OO. Under
up to SISOO. Thus, the benefici
ary who earns exactly SISOO
would lose $l5O in benefit pay
ments.
For earnings above SISOO,
benefits are reduced $1 for each
$1 in earnings.
Manager Murphy invites any
one who is now of retirement
age and who has not previously
asked for information about his
rights, to contact the social se
curity office located at 275
Peachtree Street, N. E., in At
lanta, Georgia.
Motorists should expect slip
pery roads at the start of a
shower, the Allstate Safety
Crusade cautions. Rain combins
with oil and dirt on the road
to form a film as slick as ice,
yet unnoticeable to the eye.
Farm fires in 1959 resulted
in an estimated property loss of
$174 million, says the U. S.
i Department of Agriculture.
