Boom In Tree Farms
At the rate things are going,
the South of the future will be
,'one gigantic complex of Tree
Farms and forest factories.
As of April 1, 1961, the 12
Southern Pine producing states
had more than 36 million acres
lof Tree Farms —two-thirds of
I the nation’s total. Moreover,
the region is creating new Tree
Farms at the rate of more than
2 million acres each year.
Should this pace continue,
the region, by 1975, will have
65 million Tree Farm acres
and by 2000, about 115 million
acres. For such reasons, the U.
S. Forest Service predicts even
tual concentration of the na
tion’s lumber and timber pro
i duction in the Southern Pine
states.

President Would
Establish New
Post On Women
WASHINGTON, D. C. —
President Kennedy has sent to
the Congress a bill to provide
an additional Assistant Secre
tary of Labor to help the La
bor Department “meet its in
creasing responsibilities in con
nection with the growing role
of women” in the Nation’s work
force.
The President cited estimate!
showing that in the next dec
ade the number of women
workers will rise by 25 per
cent, as compared with a 15
percent increase for men. He
said this increase will require
special attention and emphasis
upon programs devoted to wo
men workers.
A letter from Secretary of
Labor Arthur J. Goldberg,
which Mr. Kennedy sent to
Congress, said an additional As
sistant Secretary would mater
ially aid the Department in its
task.
The White Hous said Mrs. Es
ther Patterson will be given the
new post if Congress approves.
She now is Director of t h •
Labor Department's Women’s
Bureau.
