Want a quicker way to place
long distance calls?
You can speed your long dis- €
tance calls that are placed with c
an operator if you use area 5
codes, according to Ray Reece,
Southern Bell manager here. ;
The area code is the three
digit number identifying call- c
ing areas in the U. S. and Can- '
ada. When the telephone com
pany designed a system to en
able telephone users to dial '
their own long distance calls
(Direct Distance Dialing), no '
telephone number in the U. S.
and Canada could be duplicat- ‘
ed. ’
To make each telephone
number different, the country ‘
jwas divided into areas and '
each given a code. The combi- !

scriber’s telephone number
makes each telephone number
different. The code for Coving
ton is 404.
“Our customers are now us
ing the area code with DDD,”
Mr. Reece said, “but not all
long distance calls can be dial
ed direct and it is on these
calls that the area code can
save time.”
Person-to-person calls (all
DDD calls are station-to-sta
tion) and calls to towns which
cannot be reached by DDD
must still be placed through a
long distance operator, he said.
“Most telephone users long
ago learned their calls go
through faster if they give the
operator the out-of-town num
ber because it eliminates a sep
arate call to Information in
the other city,” Mr. Reece said.
“Area codes, if known and al
so given to the operator, will
further speed up the call,” he
said.
Mr. Reece suggested that
Covington telephone users save
time by following this proce
dure when placing long dis
tance calls with an operator:
If the area code for the par
ty you are calling is different
from your own area code, give
lit to the operator, along with
the telenhone number.
He further suggested that
area codes be included with
out-of-town numbers on your
frequently called list. “And,
give your code to out-of-town
callers so they can reach you
faster next time,” he said.

State Archives
Building Set
For Nov. Start
The new $4 million State Ar
chives and Records Building
recommended by Governor Er
nest Vandiver to preserve Geor
gia's priceless historical docu
ments, and to institute a mon
ey - saving records manage
, ment programs, should be un
der construction in November.
Preliminary plans for the
. 14-story building to be built in
। the Capitol Square area have
been completed by architects
and the plans are now in the
I final stages of drafting.
, Mrs. Mary Givens Bryan, Di
rector of the Department of
t Archives and History, said the
, architectural firm of A. Tho
mas Bradbury is working to
complete the plans so a con
struction contract can be let
by November.
’ The new building will be
, constructed with funds of the
State Office Building Author
-1 ity, of which State Auditor B.
E. Thrasher, Jr. is Chairman.
1 It will have four stories below
1 ground, including parking fa
r cilities and microfilming and
' records storage, and 10 stories
1 above ground, topped by a
11 penthouse to house heating and
ventilation equipment. It will
have 568,000 sq. feet of floor
space.
Completion of the building
will give Georgia, for the first
time in its history, a central,
modern state archives. Geor-
Igia is the only one of 13 Ori
ginal Colonies which has not
yet established a central his
torical archival structure, Mrs.
i Bryan said.
The completion of the ar
. chives building, expected late
. in 1962, will also give Geor
gia —for the first time — fa
g cilities for an efficient and
. workable records management
g program similar to that re
commended by the Governor’s
Commission on Economy and
Reorganization in its report
, dated August 13, 1959.
