Me And My Big Mouth!
It seems as if we got tangled up in a “hornet’s nest”
last week when we reported that the Newton High band
was late arriving at the Ram-Madison County football
game at Danielsville, depriving the band of the oppor
tunity to play the National Anthem before the game
started.
Basil Rigney, the band director, has informed us that
the reason the band was late was due to one of the mem
bers becoming ill enroute and she was transferred to
an automobile. Another thing that Mr. Rigney set us
siraight on was a matter of band etiquette. He said that
no visiting band ever plays the National Anthem on an

other field unless specifically asked to do so. Mr. Rigney
said this has happened one time since he has been in
charge of the NCHS band.
So therefore, I shall confine my remarks from now

TARKENTON LEADS VIKINGS TO VICTORY
Francis Tarkenton, whose parents live at Oxford, made
a big splash in his first professional football game Sunday
as the Minnesota Vikings downed the Chicago Bears 37-13.
Tarkenton, former ALL-SEC QB at Georgia, passed for
four TDs and scored one himself.
CAPTAINS ON COACHING STAFF AT GEORGIA
Four Georgia football coaches captained their college
teams — varsity backfield coach Charley Trippi '46; fresh

LARRY LASTER MAY PLAY IN GATOR BOWL
Newton High Rams football players will be in for a most
interesting game at the Gator Bowl come the latter part
of December if the Atlanta Journal Sports Writer Ed Miles
is correct in his forecast of bowl teams. He says that Auburn
will play Pittsburgh in the Gator Bowl. Would be nice to
see Larry Laster in that game.
Lt. Spencer S. Boyd of Porterdale, one of the all-time
great basketball players at Newton High, recently completed
the Fort Gordon MP course. Spencer is a graduate of both
