Glanton And Childs Were
Rams' Leading Tacklers
Tackle Thomas Glanton and ;

tackles and does not include ।
the assists credited to the
players.
Glanton had a total of 66 for
the season. Childs had 57 but

Three other players had an
individual record of 50 or more
tackles and they were: Jerry

Rams Rip Monroe 18-6
Newton County Rams ended the 1961 foootball season at
Monroe Friday night with a 18-6 victory. The season record
of the NCHS eleven was a respectable six victories and
four losses.
Two long scoring pass plays
and a 10-yard run by B o b
Wheeler sealed the doom of the
Monroe team. The halftime
score was 6-6 after the Pur
ple Hurricane scored a TD in
the first quarter of action.
On the third play from scrim
mage after the third period got
underway Terry Rutledge fir
ed an aerial to Charlie Childs
and the fleet-flankman grab
bed the ball near mid-field and
set-sail for the double - stripe
territory. The play covered 70
yards. Late in the fourth period
the Rams were on the Monroe
30 with third down when Rut
ledge threw a screen pass to
Ronnie Lynch who gathered the
ball in at the 35 and went all
the way for the third TD.
Turning point of the game
came in the third quarter when
the NCHS forward wall held
the Monroe team four downs
on the four-yard line. The
Purple Hurricane had driven to
the Newton five and had a
first down at that point.
Tony Adams was thrown for
a one-yard loss by Charlie
Childs and Monty Laster. Las
ter stopped the right - half
back on a pitchout at the four.
Monroe’s quarterback Greg
Adams hit the line and was
stopped at the three by Ran
dall Meadows. On fourth down
Tony Adams tried an end run
and was downed at the four by
Laster.
Monroe’s only other scoring
threat came in the fourth per
iod when they drove to t h e
NCHS 18. Ronnie Lynch inter
cepted a pass in the end zone
and the Rams took over on the
20.

RAM NOTES —
The Rams completed t w o
। passes against Monroe Friday
. and both were for touchdown.?.
Ironically the Monroe TD was
also a passing play (for 25
yards).
♦ ♦ ♦ •
We don’t know how many
TDs Charlie Childs has scored
’ during the past two years on
long passes, but none of h i s
former scoring jaunts could
have been more spectacular
and coming at an opportune
time than his 70 yarder Friday
night at Monroe, Charlie turn
ed on the steam to outrun the
last Hurricane who had a shot
at him.

The Rams 6-4 season record
was not bad at all, considering
the tough opponents played
this season. Morgan County,
one in the Class B state play
offs and Hart County both have
fine teams. Tucker, another
Class B finalist and Chamblee,
also a Class AA finalist, are
good outfits. So you see, all the
teams that beat the Rams are
in playoffs this week.
♦ * ♦ •
Looking to the future. Coach
Milton McLaney believes that
the AA classes will be re-align
ed and that some new teams
will appear on the NCHS sche
dule next fall. Maybe Winder’
and Rockdale County, just to
name a few.

Newton County fans were al
most as numerous at Monroe
Friday night as the home-town
ers. The visitors’ side of t h e
field was packed by loyal Ram
rooters.
