week that more promotional
materials have been mailed to
local churches this year than
any other year in the Methodist
Church’s history. Theme of this
year’s observance is “T h e
Christian Family Doesn’t Need
to Drink.”
In addition to several hun
dred sermons delivered on to
tal abstainenee from consump
tion of alcoholic beverages,
Methodist preachers are ex
pected to give close attention to
temperance legislation that will
come before the Georgia Gen -
eral Assembly in January. A
concerted drive, directed by the
temperance league and social
concern* boards, is being
launched in December to cur
tail any “wet” legislation that
might be introduced in t h e
assembly.
While more than 1,500 Metho

Georgia, about 1,000 will ob
serve Commitment Day in De
cember; others observed it in
November.

'Give Me a Break'
Plea of Autoists
“Can't you give me a break?”
That, according to Col. H. Lo
well Conner, state public safe
ty director, is heard more fre
quently from motorists stopped
for traffic violations than any
thing else.
“We have a new answer for
them now,” he declared. “It is
a resounding ‘NG’! From now on
warnings from our troopers will
be few. They have orders to
make cases against reckless,
thoughtless drivers, whether
they be first offenders or re
peaters.”
And Col. Conner obviously
has good reason for his latest
get-tough policy. He turned to
last year’s traffic accident sta
tistics to prove it. Said he:
“All in all, 63,918 drivers
caused accidents by violating
some traffic law or safety rule
and thereby caused 101,921
drivers to be involved in acci
dents, 38,003 of whom were
innocent of a violation.
“In other words, more than
a third of the drivers involved
in accidents were law-abiding
motorists who had no control
over what happened. It was the
63,918 who caused the trouble.
They didn’t give those i*mo
cent persons a break — and
we'ie not going to give the
violators a break either.

In spit* of all that has been
written and said about the prob
lem of mastitis in dairy cattle,
this disease is still costing the
nation', farmers approximately
$386 millions per year
This represents an average low
of $19.30 for each dairy cow in the
nation . a huge sum, any way
you look at it
Why can’t we whip maatitto?
Some authorities believe that one
reason for our failure is the
tendency of many farmers to
“tinker” with mastitis treatments,
rather than entering an all-out
campaign to eradicate the dis
ease from their herds.
nn.A' Bl । *».
The disease mastitis is ceeting
dairy farmers nearly S2O per cow
per year.
Frankly, halfway measure,
aren't the answer. If a farmer
really wants to clean up masti
tis, be may want to have a veter
inarian make a complete herd
checkup and outline a planned
eradication program. Each cow
needs to be examined. Further,
the veterinarian will want to
check to determine which type
of mastitis organism is causing
the problem.
A variety of different disease
organisms *nter the picture, and
the exact treatment depends on
which organism is doing the dam
age. There are streptococcic or
ganisms, staphylococcic organ
isms, coliform organisms, yeasts,
and others. A medicine which is
effective against one organism
may be entirely useless against
another.
So the first thing is to find out
which TYPE of mastitis is pres
ent, and then adopt a control
program to root it out.
Milking sanitation and proper
milking procedures are impor
tant, also. Such measures include
care about the vacuum on milking
machines, sterilising hands and
equipment between cows, and
providing clean, comfortable and
sanitary quarters for the berd.
