Forest Industry In State
Forest income to landowners
in Georgia has increased from
135 million dollars in 1957 to
155 million dollars in 1960.
One reason for this increase is
that landowners have been fol
lowing the six steps of forestry
management set up by the Ex
tension Service.
If you are not following
these six important steps with
your forest acres, your income
may be reduced. These six
ateps are wise selling practices,
good harvesting practices, di
versified utilization, timber
atand improvement, reforesta
tion of idle lands, and preven
tion and control of fires. My

If the forest industry in the
state is to continue to grow,
forest owners must engage in
better marketing of forest pro
ducts and more efficient use of
timberlands. This section is
ideally suited to timber pro
duction. and there is indication
of ever increasing need for
wood products. This being the
case, it would be a good idea
for you to examine your forest
and see if you are following
the Extension Service’s six
step forestry program.
Lime Garden Soils
Planning a garden next spring
and summer?
Now is a good time to lime
I that garden soil. This one way
to insure a better garden, be
cause vegetable growing de
pends largely on the acidity of
the soil.
The acidity of the soil can
be adjusted by using lime Most
of the soils in this area are
acid, and they can be corrected
by applying lime.
How can we tell if the soil
needs lime? The answer to this
is by taking a soil test. The
acidity of the soil is given as
pH. You can change the pH
level of a soil by using lime.
The best pH level for garden
soil is between five and a half
and six and a half.
If you .need help in soil test
ing contact my office.
Pruning Spring Flowering
Shrubs
Do not prune spring flower
ing shrubs this time of year.
Why not? Because the shrub’s
bloom is on the wood of the
previous season's growth and
fall pruning eliminates branch
es that would bloom next
spring.
If you want to prune broad
leaved evergreens, it is best
to wait until late winter. If you
wait, you won’t have a stub
which will stay the entire
winter while the plant in no*
growing. This, as you know,
will cause a bad appearance.
Farm Fishpond
Farm fishponds are becom
ing more popular each year.
Maybe you are planning to
build one in the future or im
prove the one you have. If you
are, there are several essentials
to having a good pond on your
farm.
I’m sure you know that there
are more uses to a pond than
fishing. These ponds can fur
nish water for livestock and
for irrigation systems as well
as fire protection. Don’t forget
the recreation provided by
swimming and boating. You
can also raise some income by
selling fishing permits.
Good essentials of a pond
that we mentioned earlier are
a good clay core for a dam,
drainpipe for protection while
building the dam and for re
moving troublesome fish popu
lations, spillway for overflow,
diversion ditch around pond,
and steep sides to prevent
weeds and to aid in preventing
over-stocking with small fish.
Farm ponds should be ferti
lized so that the fish produc
tion wild increase. In addition,
fertilization will make possi
ble one standard rate of stock-

Tree Farmer
Growing
Profession
A comparatively new and
booming profession in the
South is “tree farming.”
The 12 state region has more
than 38 million—or two-thirds
—of the nation’s 57 million
acres of “tree farms.”
Working diligently behind
the broad emerald forest belt
are the “tree farmers” them
selves. Who are they? What are
their incentives? What is the
importance of the job they’re
doing?
According to the Southern
Pine Association, some “tree

the growth of submerged
waterweeds.

fishponds can be obtained at

Radioactive 131 Hazard
Radioactive iodine 131 can
be one of the most hazardous
problems of food contamina
tion during the first 60 days
following a nuclear attack.
However, scientists tell us that
much can be done to overcome
this hazard.
This iodine 131 would con
taminate almost all fresh foods.
Because the radioactivity in
the material is so short lived,
there are several things that
can be done to remove or re
duce the dangers to humans.
Should iodine 131 get into fluid
milk there are precautions tha*
will protect humans. The
milk containing relatively
low amounts of radioactivity
could simply be stored for a
week or so until the radioactivi
ty decayed. One can keep
commercial pasteurized, hom
ogenized milk for this period
of time at usual refrigeration
temperatures.
If the iodine 131 level is high
enough to require 30 to 40
days storage before the radio
activity is decayed, then the
milk could be frozen. Other
means of holding milk the re
quired time would be process
ing it as dried milk, canned
milk, cheese or butter.
So you see that research is
going on every day in order
to help humans survive in the
event of a nuclear attack.
farmers” are part industrialist,
part agriculturalist. Nearly ah
the lumber and paper compan
ies that own forestland are
practicing the most intensive
kind of "tree farming.” They
are planting and growing trees
like a crop, while planning
carefully for the future. The
work also involves a growing
offensive against the tradition
al enemies of trees —fires, in
sects and disease.
Modern equipment, such as
airplanes and radio communica
tions, often figure in the vigi
lance against forest fire.
For many lumber companies,
the actual “tree farming” is
performed by teams of profes
sional foresters, who hold uni
versity degrees in their highly
specialized vocation. They su
pervise the harvest of the for
est “crop,” and they are re
sponsible for making sure of a
constant excess of growth over
removal.
On an overall basis, the lum
ber and paper companies hold i
only about one-sixth of the
commercial forest area in the
South. The remaining five
sixths is the hands of farmers j
and other non-industrial own
ers — numbering nearly two I
million in all.
To help these small owners |
acquire the know-how of in
dustry in good forest manage- j
ment, is the real purpose of the |
“tree farms” program. The
movement was introduced to j
the 12 state region in 1942 by j
the Southern Pine Association,
an organization of lumber 1
manufacturers. Now administ- ;
ered bv American Forest Pro- j
ducts Industries, Inc., it has in- |
troduced the techniques of I
“tree farming” to countless!
small woodlots.
More than 60 percent of all
Southern “tree farmers” are I
farmers in the strict sense of I
terms. With trees providing a I
major additional crop, many I
farmers are using the addition
al income to send their chil
dren through college. There is
also nationwide significance to
the work they’re doing.
Largely because of unlimit
ed growth opportunities in the i
12 state region, the U. S. For- !
est Service has forecast even-1
tual concentration of the na
tion’s lumber and timber pro- 1
duction in the South.
The great future demand,
this prediction implies is a;
strong incentive for the “tree
farmer.” Equally impelling is
the ideal adaptability of the
region’s principal forest species

to new and anticipated methods
of construction.
Southern Pine provides more
than two-thirds of the region’s
lumber. Tables published by
the U. S. Department of Agri
culture prove that it is the
strongest of the building woods.
High strength is the main re
quirement of new building sys
tems which use components
and panelized parts. To furthe:
enhance the adapatibility of its
principle species, the Southern
lumber industry has succeeded
in standardizing a process of
seasoning and “pre-shrinking”
which virtually doubles the na
tural wood strength.
With about six million acres
of “tree farms,” Alabama has
more than any other state.
