Be Water Ready, ;
Fight Farm Fires 1
It could have been prevent- 1
ed! This is the tragic fact be- '
hind most every fire.
In rural and farm areas fires
destroy an estimated 110 mil
lion dollars worth of property ’
each year and take up to 3,500 1
lives.
Prevention depends on alert
ness plus provision for an ade- J
quate supply of water at all
times, advises the Water Sys
tems Council.
Fire protection authorities
recommend that at least 3,000
gallons of water should be im
mediately available for us at
any time of the year. To pro
duce emergency water for the
average farm or rural home,
several sources can be devel
oped:
(1) A swimming pool pro
vides not only water as a rec
reation center but pumping
equipment necessary for fire
treatment.
(2) A pond not more than
1,000 feet from the buildings is
an excellent source of water.
, Also, it can serve as a private
fishing hole.
(3) A cistern (possibly fed
by a spring from farm roof
run-off) also collects usuable
supplies.
Regardless of the water
source chosen the key to fire'
protection lies in a properly ;
sized water system piping. Get!
it large enough to supply water
in the quantity desired at ade
quate pressure for fire fighting.
According to the Water Sys
iterns Council, a properly sized

water system should deliver a
minimum of 400 gallons per
hour for effective fire righting.
Water must be close at hand.
Fire lines that stretch too long
can be a limitation to fire
fighting efforts. 250 to 1,000
feet is the maximum.
Yard hydrants used for stock
watering can be put to good
use in fire fighting efforts. Hy
drants should be of the non
freezing type so water will be
available even in sub-zero
weather.
A word of caution: To in
sure functioning of a pump the
Water Systems Council recom
mends that the power lines to
it should be separate from the
house circuit. An underground
line directly to the pump from
the outside power metering
pole is suggested. This would
protect the pump against shorts
or breaks should the house
wiring be in the fire area.
