Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Den
nard of Oxford were honored
Sunday afternoon with an
©pen house and tea in obser
vance of their 50th wedding
anniversary, given by their
daughter, Mrs. R. W. Reid.
Arrangements of gold and
bronze chrysanthemums and
other fall flowers were used
artistically throughout the
home. The dining room table
■was overlaid with a g o 1 d
linen cloth and centered with
a beautifully decorated wed
ding cake topped with a gold
“50”. Napkins imprinted
“Bessie and Jesse”, in gold,
with cakes and mints beau
tifully decorated in gold and
gold tinted punch completed
the table’s apointments.

two children, Mrs. R. W. Reid,
Oxford and Thomas Dennard
of Jacksonville, Florida.

Sailers' Home
The Sadie Polson Circle met
at Mrs. Frank Sailers’ home
Saturday, December 9, Twenty
members were present and one
new member, Mrs. Eloise Rea
gin. The guests were M r a. Co
fer and Miss Sadie Polson.
Miss Polson opened the
meeting with prayer. June Head
and Billie Asbel) presented the
program “Missions In Your
Home”. Miss Polson was pre
sented with a birthday and
Christmas gift by the circle.
The meeting was closed with
prayer led by Janice Richard
son.
The meeting next month will
be at the home of Billie Asbell.

Circle Met at
Cowan Home
The Maggie Hull Circle of
Zion Baptist Church met at
the home of Mrs. John Cowan
on December 5. Mrs. Jim Pen
nington, chairman, presided and
called on Mrs. Nell McCul
lough for the opening prayer.
Mrs. Dovie Hull, secretary,
called the roll with 15 present
and one new member. Mrs.
Troy Kinnett and Mrs. Ollie
Stallsworth were welcomed as
visitors.
Mrs. Hull announced the
homes for the circle meetings
during the coming year. Re
ports for this year’s work were
given.
Mrs. Herman McCullough
was in charge of the program
taken from the Prayer Service
with subject, “Missions in Your
Home”, and scripture 2nd Co
rinthians 4:6. The theme for
the quarter is “Missionary
Study, Hands Across the Sea”.
Taking part on the program
were Mrs. Nell McCullough,
Mrs. Fred Dillard and Mrs.
Roy Kirkus.
The theme for the social
hour was Christmas for Christ.
Those assisting Mrs. Cowan in
serving were Mrs. Nell Mc-
Cullough, Mrs. Roy Kirkus and
Mrs. Jewell Freeman.
Friends of little Monty
Smith, the young son of Mr.
and Mrs. Lamar Smith, will
be glad to know he is now at
home after undergoing surgery
last week at St. Joseph’s In
firmary in Atlanta.

Night Set at
Porterdale Church
PORTERDALE — The An
nual Family Night of the Por
terdale Baptist Church will be
held on Saturday night, De
cember 16.
This night of fun and fel
lowship and worship is spon
sored by the Brotherhood or
ganization.
The members of the churcn
will enjoy a covered dish sup
per beginning at 7 p. m. The
Junior and Primary Choir will
present a program of Christmas
music telling the wonderful
story of the birth of Jesus.
There will be solos, duets and
many choir members. The
members of the choir are Cindy
Moss, Linda Maddox, Brenda
Herring, Linda Lance. Becky
Lance. Kay Kerbow, Sally
Smallwood, Debra Head, Louise
Savage, Judy Savage. Johnny
Lance. Kevin Bates, Marie Al

CARD OF THANKS
We would like to express our
sincere appreciation to the
people of Covington Mill, when
I was burned October 20. espe
cially the ones that rescued
me.
To Dr. Crews, the nurses of
Newton County Hospital and
the Harwell Ambulance Ser
vice for the efficient efforts in
getting Floyd Byrd and myself
to St. Joseph Hospital in do
ing so two Jives were saved.
We would like to say “thank
you” for the many cards, tele
phone calls, flowers, trays, let
ters and love offerings which
were very helpful and we’ll

Wes/eyon Service Guild Held
December Meeting Tuesday at Church
The December meeting of
the Wesleyan Service Guild
was held on Tuesday, Decem
ber 5, at the First Methodist
Church.
The president opened the
meeting with a prayer. The
secretary read the minutes and
also a letter from Mrs. Stella
Sumner, who is in New York
with her daughter. We plan
ned to send her a shower of
Christmas cards. The treasur
er’s report was given. The
committee chairman gave their
reoorts.
It was announced that March
4-7 is the tentative dates for
our School of Missions. The
Society will study two books
“The Meaning of Suffering ’
and “Latin America”. The mo
tion was made and carried to
have a study of one more Mis
sion Study book on two conse
cutive Sunday afternoons in
Presbyterian Circle Five Met Tuesday
At the Home of Mrs. Foster Hudson
Circle Number 5 of the Pres
byterian Church met Tuesday
evening, December 5, at the
home of Mrs. Foster Hudson.
Mrs. Hudson opened the meet
ing with directed prayer.
Mrs. Hugh King gave the
Bible Study. Mrs. Hudson gave
the “Let’s Learn About the
Joy Gift”. Ten members an
swered roll call and • reported
27 visits. Two visitors enjoyed
the meeting.

Meeting at the Parsonage
The Women's Society of
Christian Service of Salem
Methodist Church met at the
Salem Parsonage on Decem
ber 6 at 4 o’clock for their re
gular monthly meeting.
Rev. and Mrs. Wayne Fears
were gracious hosts and wel
comed the group into their
home.
Mrs. J. F Bums, president,
presided and called the meeting
to order with words of wel
come to each one present.
“Joy To The World” was
used as an opening song.
Mrs. Douglas Yancey brought
the devotional using Luke 2:10
- 11 as a scriptural background
for a meditation which appeared
in the Wesleyan Christian Ad
vocate in 1957 entitled “Keep
ing Christmas in Our Hearts”
and she also used a poem en
titled “Expectancy.” Mrs. Yan
cey closed with prayer.
Nine members and Rev. Fears
repeated verses of scripture as
the roll was called.
The minutes of the Novem
ber meeting were read and ap
proved. The treasurer’s report
was given and pledges were
paid at this time.
During the business session,
Mrs. Burns thanked each of the
WSCS members and Rev. Fears
for their part in the study
“Edge of the Edge” held in
November jointly with the
Wesleyan Service Guild and
which proved to be a very good
study and was helpful to all
who attended.
Christmas Remembrances to
shut-ins were discussed and
local people who are shut-ins
were chosen to receive gifts
from the Society at this season.
The gifts will be sunshine box
es. fruit, food and flowers.
Mrs. G. W. Ramsey, program
chairman, read the scripture
from the Book of Luke as a
background for her program
which was “The Magnifiance
and Splendor of His Coming.”
She was assisted by Miss Ruth
Loyd who brought a meditation
on “Behold, I Bring Good Tid
ings”; Mrs. P B. Ellington with
“The Magnifiance of Christ’s
Coming” and Mrs. J. F. Burns
with a meditation on “As Seen
by John”. The closing song
was “Come and Worship.”
Mrs. Ramsey closed the
program with prayer.
The parsonage was beauti
fully decorated in the Christ
mas motif. The dining table
was overlaid with a hand-made
linen cloth which was a gift to
Mrs. Fears, and held the cen
tral decoration of Christmas co
lors and burning white tapers.

ed table, refreshments of dain
ty fruit shaped and colored
cookies and hot coffee was ser
ved.
Mrs. Douglas Robertson will

of Golden. Colorado will ar
rive in Covington Sunday for
a two weeks visit with Dr. and
Mrs. F. C. Nesbit and other
relatives. On Dec. 22, Mrs. Nes
bit will serve as matron of
honor in the wedding of her i

The program was a very
meaningful Christmas one. Mrs’
Ruth Taylor read the scripture
after which Mrs. Jack Pound
sang, “It Came Upon A Mid
night Clear”. Then Mrs. Taylor
gave a beautiful talk on “What
Is Christmas — It’s Meaning”.
Mrs. Glenn Jones closed with
a prayer.
Mrs. Paul Adams, Spiritual
Life chairman, gave the de
votional, consisting of Christ
mas Carols and scripture pas
sages.
We were so happy to wel
come Mrs. Cecil Brown and
Mrs. Bill Morris as new mem
bers.
The social hour was delight
ful and carried out the holiday
theme. The hostesses were
Mrs. Mel Waggoner, Mrs. Edna
Miller and Mrs. Ruth Taylor.

Newborn Woman's Society Christian
Service Met at Home of Mrs. Hinton
The Woman’s Society of
Christian Service of Newborn
Church met Wednesday after
noon with Mrs. Gary Hinton
with a good attendance. The
home was beautifully decorat
ed with Christmas decorations.
Mrs. T. W. Binford, president,
called the meeting to order
with the song, “O Little Town
of Bethlehem”, sung in unison
and the opening prayer given
by Mrs. Asbury Craft.
Minutes were given of the
last meeting and Miss Mellie
Pitts gave the treasurer’s re
port. A special welcome was
given to D. A. Wood, Tom Mit
chell of Loganville; Walter
Murphy and Julianne of Ox
ford and Mrs. Hulon Adams,
visitors for the afternoon.
It was voted to send a Christ

Mrs. Murphy gave the pro
gram on the subject, “The
Symbols of the Birth of Jesus
Christ”. She explained the use
of bells, flowers, trees, carols,
star, creche, lambs, Shepherds
and crib. She then read a ser
mon of Rev. Peter Marshal on
observing Christmas for Christ.
She concluded with prayer.
The group was inrited into
the dining room where delici
ous refreshments appropriate
of the season were served from
a beautifully appointed table.
