THE CHURCH OFFERS HOPE
No thinking person would
deny that civilization is suffer
ing from spiritual sickness. The
past few decades is a history of
tears, corruption and whole
sale slaughter.
George Bernard Shaw, pre
facing his play, “Androcles and
the Lion”, wrote, “I am ready
to admit that after contem
plating the world and human
nature for nearly 60 years, I
see no way out of the world’s
misery but the way which
would have been found by
Christ’s will if He had under
taken the work of a modern
practical statesman.”
The Church has a tremen
dous responsibility which is
evident in the statement by
Lord Tweedsmuir, “Civiliza
tion must have a Christian ba
sis and must ultimately rest on
the Christian church.”
The Christian church must
not only teach Faith in the
goodness of God. It must also
inspire men and women to
commit themselves to the
principles for which it stands.
Albert Einstein praised the
Church for its courageous stand
in Germany. “Being a lover of
freedom,” he wrote, “when the
revolution came in Germany, I
looked to the universities to
defend it, knowing that they
had always boasted of their

devotion to the cause of truth;
but, no, the universities were
immediately silenced. Then I
looked to the great editors of
the newspapers whose flaming
editorials in days gone had
proclaimed their love of freed
om: but they, like the univer
sities, were silenced in a few
short weeks . . . Only the
Church stood squarely across
the path of Hitler’s campaign
for suppressing truth . . . The
Church alone had the courage
and presistence to stand for
intellectual truth and moral
freedom.”
Lewis Mumford concludes
that the Church is the hope of
humanity. “A Church that
taught one part of mankind to
walk upright and unafraid
through one Dark Age may yet
summon up the power that will
enable us to avert another
Dark Age. or to face it, if it
begins to descend upon us, with
unyielding courage.”
The Church does not promise
immunity from crisis, but it
does promise the courage and
strength to face every experi
ence with spiritual fortitude.
Recognition and application of
the principles of the Church
are necessary before the mem
bers of our society can be cur
ed of hate, greed and selfish
ness. It can begin with us!

STRENGTH GAUGE
A reliable gauge of the
strength of lumber is its water
level. The lower the moisture
content, the higher the strength.
For this and other reasons,
proper seasoning is a manda
tory grade requirement for
Southern Pine. By seasoning,
the lumber is dried and pre
shrunk before being surfaced
to final size. Bonus strength
ratings are recognized for
Southern Pine framing sea
■ soned to moisture content of
, 15 percent or lower.
