If someone completely ignor
ant of the celebration of Christ
mas should ask the question,
“What Is Christmas?? — it
might be a rather confusing
picture they would see, as we
sought, in our enthusiasm, to
enlighten him.
First we might say, it is the
celebration of Christ’s Birth
day:; and because of Him we
know the Spirit of Love, Hu
man Kindness and Giving,
which is much in evidence dur
ing the Sacred Season.
We really do not know the
exact date when Christmas, as
such, wag first celebrated. We
only know that its name came
from Christ’s Mas, highlight
of the Catholic Religious Ac
tivities; and that it was first
mentioned in writings of Chry
gostom.
We might explain that be

Christmas Holiday Schedule Announced Here

To Close Christmas D
The Christmas holiday schedule in Covington and New
ton County has been announced by business firms, public
officials and the local government agencies with offices in
the city.
Newton County School dis
missed after classes yester
day (Wednesday) and will not
resume their regular schedule
until Tuesday, January 2. This
includes the high schools of the
county and all the elementary
schools.
Most of the merchants of the
city have agreed to take Christ
mas day, Monday December
25th, as a holiday. Members of
the Newton County Chamber
of Commerce, in a vote at th2
December meeting, decided
that one day would be taken
for Christmas.
“*Covington City Hall will be
closed Monday only. Regular
business hours will be observ
ed Saturday, December 23.
Closing time is 4 P.M.
Courthouse officials have an
nounced that Monday, Decem
ber 25 will be their holiday.
However, some of the federal
and county offices may be
closed on Saturday afternoon.
The Covington Post Office
will offer service at the win
dows on Saturday afternoon.
Monday, Christmas day, will
be a holiday for all postal em
ployees.
The Bank of Covington also
will take Monday as a holiday.
Usual hours of operation will
be observed on Saturday pre
ceding Christmas, it was an
nounced.

and that includes Newton

Be Open Again

Stores in Covington will be
open again Friday might, De
cember 22nd, until 9 p. m. This
marks the second consecutive
Friday night preceding Christ
mas that the local merchants
have remained open on Friday
evening.
Many of the local merchants
reported that hundreds of New
ton Countians availed themsel
ves of the opportunity to
Christmas shop last Friday
night, despite the rainy wea
ther. Most business firm of
ficials reported brisk sales to
people who otherwise would not
have had a chance to trade in
downtown Covington during the
day. ‘
It was emphasized that free
parking is permitted after 5
o’clock on Friday on the Cov
ington Streets.

Followup of Cancer Prevention
Study Starfed in Newfon Co.
Volunteer researchers of the
American Cancer Society’s
Newton Unit are beginning
their work once again for the
second-year followup in the lar
gest medical statistical survey
ever conducted in the United
States.
Serving as chairman of the
projects in Newton County is
Mrs. E. E. Callaway, Jr. Others
assisting in this effort are: Mrs.
Curry T. Haynes, Mrs. Stella
Moss, Mrs. Frances Underwood,
Clara Bird, Hazel Dickerson,
Mrs. Sue S. Sims, Mary O.
Johnson, Mrs. Irene Gregg and
Mrs. Edna M. Edwards.
The project, called the Can
cer Prevention Study, is aimed
at learning more about w h y{
some people are more likely to
develop. certain types of cancer
than others. Nationwide nearly;
70,000 trained volunteers a r e
checking on 1,100,000 Ameri-|
cans enrolled in the study.f
Nearly 30,000 Georgians from |
72 counties are participating in|
the project. And here in New-
