Gains in Life Insurance
Insured American families in
1961 increased their average
life insurance ownership to
$13,700, purchased a record
$79.500,000,000 of new life in
surance from the legal reserve
life insurance companies and
bosted their aggregate owner
ship to $635,000,000,000. This
accomplishment of 120,000,000
policyholders was reflected in
preliminary figures reported to
day by the Institute of Litle
Insurance. f
The year’s purchases of new |
life insurance by American
families totaled $79,500,000,000,
a 7 percent increase over the
$74,4000,000,000 purchased in
1960, and an all-time high. Both
ordinary and group life insur
ance purchases in 1961 were at
record levels with ordinary up
2 percent from 1960 to $54,000,~
000,000, and group reaching
$18.500,000,000, a 26 percent
increase. Industrial purchases
of $7,000,000,000 were slightly
above last year‘s total. An ag
gregate of some 25,200,000 in=-
dividual policies and group cer- |
tificates were issued in 1961,

ownership increased 8 percent
in 1961 and at the close of the
vear was twice the total of
seven years ago. Ordinary life
| insurance in force totaled $365,-
| 000,000,000, at yearend, a 7
percent increase over the pre
vious year. Group life insur
ance gained 11 percent in the
year to reach a high of $195,-
000,000,000. Industrial life in
surance at $40,000,000,000, re
mained almost unchanged in the
year, and credit life insurance
was up 12 percent to $35,000,-
000,000. A total of some 287,-
000,000 individual policies and
group certificates were owned
at the close of 1961.
While year-end figures are
not yet available, indications are
that the life companies continu
ed to grow.
