’ THE GREATEST BOOK
} EVER WRITTEN
- Once a young man was pack
‘ing his bag for a long journey
‘Hhe packed his clothes and al’
‘the things he thought he would
need. Before he closed it he
noticed one corner which was
still empty. He turned to his
friend and said: “Into this lit
tle corner I will put a guide
book, a lamp, a mirror, a mi
croscope, a telescope, a volume
of choice poems, several well
written biographies, a pack
age of old letters, a book of
songs, a sharp sword and a
small library of more than six
ty volumes.” His friend replied
in astonishment, “You can’t
possibly put all the things you
hav mentioned in that small
space.” “You just watch,” he
said, “and I will show you.”
Into the empty corner he
placed his Bible.
The Bible is an amazing
book It was written over a pe
riod of fifteen hundred years
by different people and in dif
ferent languages. It has a mes
sage for every person who
lives. It holds the answer to all
our preplexing problems, fears
and frustrations.
It Speaks To All
The Bible has been used as
a textbook for patriots and re
formers; it has been a message
of hope to the suffering; it has
been a medicine bottle to the
sick; it has been a guide for
those seeking a better life. The
Bible has captured the minds
of our wisest philosophers; it
has spoken, and continues to
speak, to the poet, painter
scientist and to the common
man.
“Most books fill a place in
your library. The Bible fills a
place in your life,” wrote Dave
Boone. Many of us have failed
to take advantage of the source
of power which the Bible of
fers. A sérious study of the
Bible will lead to a new and
thrilling life. “If all the Bibles
- were dusted simultaneously,”
wrote David Nygren, “we
would have a record dust storm
and the sun would go into
eclipse for a whole week!” |
Light, Hope, Compass
Let me suggest three areas
in which the Bible has mean
ing for our lives. Though it was \
written many centuries ago, it
is still as fresh as the morn
ing paper. |
(1) The Bible serves as a
Calendar Dates
From 1882; Will
\ .
Last Until 2500
Despite efforts from time to
time to set up a new method
of marking time, the Gregorian
calendar, instituted by Pope
Gregory in the year 1582 ap
pears unlikely to be replaced
for some time to come. . . pro
bably until at least 2500 A. D.
Mathematicians guarantee that
the calendar will be accurate
until that time.
The Gregorian calendar still
doesn’t please everybody. But
this is not unusual. People like
to be fussy about time. Once a
year in many areas of the
United States there is the an
nual squabble about the use of
“daylight savings time”. Resi
dents in one area who live in
the edge of another time zone
attempt to get the zones chang
ed. Kentucky, for example, was
the scene of such activit; re
cently when residents of sev
eral cities of that state, tiring
of switching each summer to
“daylight saving time” at
tempted to get their clocks
moved up an hour all year
round by having the Eastern
Time Zone extended further
westward.
Our current method of keep
ing time takes into consider
ation the solar vear which ac
tually consists of 365 days, 5
hours, 48 minutes. and 46 sec
onds. Because of the extra
hours, minutes and seconds. it
is required that the Gregorian
calendar contain a well-order
ed system of Leap Years to keep
the calendar and the solar
equinoxes congruent,
The Gregorian Calendar pro
vides that years divisible by
’-"our', exclusive of the years
wumbering the centuries—shall
have 366 days, and the century
-marking years shall be leap
vears only if they are divisible
bv four after the ciphers have
been removed.

light when we are struggling
in the darkness of some sor
row. In its pages we find such
golden thoughts as this: “Leti
not your heart be troubled: ye
believe in God, believe also in
me.” (John 14:1)
(2) The Bible is also a ray of
hope as we trudge along the
rugged slopes of disappoint
ment. In its pages we find as
surance, Nothing “shall be able
to separate us from the love of
God.” (Romans 8:39)
(3) The Bible is a compass
to guide us safely through the
storms of life into the Fath
er's harbor. It not only shows
us the harbor, but will help
us reach it without running on
the rocks. Read it and you'll
find it’s true.

Over 4,000 disabled veterans
are hospitalized in government
institutions in Georgia; hun

public hospitals, and thousands
are being cared for in their own
homes, Wheeler said.
They will sincerely appre

Some of these veterans have
no families to help bring them

the economic hardship. caused
