Tips for Safer Holiday Driving
: By Lucile Higginbotham
~ Holiday driving and long.
‘hours of winter darkness mean
‘extra hazards for all of us. Here
are a few tips that may make
your holiday driving safer:
1. Darkness quadruples driv
ing danger. Although only one
third of the nation’s driving is
done after dark, two- thirds of
all traffic fatalities occur dur
ing this period. |
2. Clear windshileds will help
vou make the most of available
light. Service station atten
dants and automatic window
washers simplify keeping the
outside clean. The winter film
that accumulates on the inside
of windshields and rear win
dows can cut visability and turn
approaching headlights into a
blinding glare. A defroster will
help with this problem.
3. Snow during winter even
in® mav further reduce visi
bility. Avoid the temptation to
use your bright lights as they
create a glare for you and ap
proaching vehicles. In snow
and fog normal driving lights
and reduced speed are your
best aids.
4, The Christmas Holiday
Season may bring snow and
rain, resulting in slick streets
and highways. These adverse
driving conditions reduce vis
ibility and increase braking
distances and may cause rear
end collisions. Reduce speed to
lower braking distance, in
crease the distance between
you and the vehicle ahead to
allow more room for stopping,
and keep alert to traffic ahead.
5. “Tailgating drivers” who
fail to follow you at a safe dis
tance can be a serious problem.
Some measures you may take to
avoid trouble with such driv
ers are:
Pull to the right, if possible,
to encourage the “tailgater” to
pass.
Increase the distance between
vou and the car you are follow
ing to avoid the necessity of
stopping suddenly. The slower
vour stop,. the more time the
“tailgater” has to get h i s ve
‘hicle under control.
~ Signal your intention to
iturn‘ slow down or stop well in
advance and as emphatically as
possible so that the “tailgater”
will know what you plan to
do.
Know what traffic around
vou is deing so that if necessary
'you may use evasive maneu
vers to avoid being hit from the
R iel o
will be invited to see the pic
ture when it is shown in their
communities.
Blue Rambler band mem
bers that are seniors this year,
as well as Cadet band members
that will be in the senior band
next year will be allowed to
participate in the band repre
senting Newton County and
Georgia. Band members and
their director, Basil Rigney, are

img this high honor for them
selves and Newton County.

Even though the “tailgater”

be held legally responsible, this
will be little comfort when a

Message from
Mrs. Johnson
By Mrs. Lottie B. Johnson
(Associate H. D. Agent)
This year, as in years past,
Christmas for many people will
be just another holiday vague
ly associated with the birth of
Christ. There will be feasting
and reveley for some. F or
others, it will mean a bit more.
Millions will sing, “Joy to the
World, the Lord Is Come.” Yes,
and no inconsiderable number
will be thinking of things to
do in the name of Christ. Many
Christmas cards, gifts, both
large and small, will be sent to
set forth a vision of the world
in which we live.
In glancing over the county,
watching the signs of the sea
son appear, it is interesting to
find one’s self pondering over
what Christmas will mean to
each of us. Will we celebrate
Christmas mainly as a holiday?
4-H’ers, will it be just another
day we will not have to go to
class? As adults, will it be just
another day we will not have to
go to work? Will Christmas
mean something more to us?
The answer lies within our
hearts.
Also during the week a work
shop was held at Washington
Street school for the purpose
of training leaders to help
themselves and others in get
ting the most out of their sew
ing machines. Leaders attend
ing the workshop were trained
to clean, adjust, and operate
their machines more effectively:
