woven with our family and re
ligious lives, it is an integral
part of our lives and memories.
Christmas is Sounds —
CHRISTMAS CAROLS—Clar
ion voices of church bells call
ing us to worship the Saviour
whose birthday we commemo
rate. Tinkling bells, the herald
of arriving guests, the bustle
of welcomes and greetings. The
dog's excited, joyous bark; the
cat’s indignant yowl as some
careless foot terminates his
peaceful nap. The Sound in the
Night, that every child knows
is Santa walking on the roof.
Blasts of toy horns and drums;
laughter, jests and squeals of
delight over gifts. The Sound
of Silence that follows the
name of a loved one absent
from the family circle, for the
first time.
Christmas is Smells and
Tastes—turkey browned just
right; cranberries bubbling in
to delicious sauce; spicy aroma
of mincemeat pies, plum pud
ding and fruit cake. The frag
rance of pine, spruce, fir and
holly tree; Santa Claus fruits;
THE COVINGTON NEWS
and the soothing odor of oak
embers. And, all the tantaliz
ing, tangy tastes of the tradi
tional culinary perfections
especially reserved for the
Yuletide feast.
Christmas is Sights — the
fairyland magic of Christmas
tree lights; of gold, silver, and
multi-colored wrappings and
ribbons; and most dazzling oi
all—the light in the chiidren’s
eyes as their mad rush to the
Christmas Tree ends in a
hushed pause, as they pay in
voluntary tribute to the Mira
cle of Santa Claus!
Christmas is Giving—No gift
quite adequate to express our
love to our own friend or fam
ily, as we give in memory of
‘the Greatest Gift placed on the
Altar of Love, by the Saviour.
There’s the joy that comes fromn
giving; and the yearning to
give to everyone in mneed, that
makes our hearts ache because
we cannot.
Christmas is Homecoming—
when the family circle is join
ed by new members through
marriage and birth, to fill the
vacancies of those who have
gone on, but whose presence 18
almost tangible in spirit.
Archbishop Spellman once
said this of Christmas, “Holi
day and Holy Day, Christmas
is more than yule log, tree or
holly—it is more than natural
good cheer and giving gifts—
It is more than the feast of
home and children, loved ones
and friendship—more than all
of these together—for Christ
mas is Christ — the Christ of
Justice and Charity and Freed
om and Peace.
The Joy of Christmas is a
joy that war cannot kill; for
it is a joy of the Soul, and the
soul cannot die. It is a joy that
poverty cannot prevent, for it
is a joy that earthly wealth
cannot buy. Time cannot with
er the joy of Christmas for ii
belongs to Eternity. The world
cannot shatter the Joy of
Christmas for it belongs to
Eternity. The world cannot
shatter the Joy of Christmas
for it is union with Him who
overcame the world.
Not until men lay aside
greed, pride and the tyranny
of evil passions, to travel the
road that begen at Bethlehem,
will the Star of Christmas
Peace illuminate the world.
Christmas is the birthday of
Freedom, for it i« only the fol
lowing -of Christ that makes
‘men Free.”
' Various groups exemplify
‘the Spirit of Christmas; many
church organizations with
Christmas baskets; the Rotary
Club with its Empty Stocking
Fund, etc. A project to bring
cheer to local hospital patients
is being sponsored by the Cov
ington, Miniature and Green
Thumb Garden Clubs, with
Yuletide Arrangements. An in
novation in Christmas Trees i 3
that of the Girl Scouts, under
the direction of Mrs. E. E. Cal
laway. This, too, is on the
grounds -of Newton County
Hospital, will entertain pa
tients, as well as the birds the
tree will attract, Instead of tra~
ditional lights and trimmings,i
the Girl Scouts have decorated
a “Bird Christmas Tree"—wit'xl‘
ornaments designed of favoritej
foods of our little feathered
friends. And no doubt, they
will be chirping a .musical]
“Thank You” to the Girl Scouts
for their thoughtfulness in pro
viding them with a Christmas
Feast. |
“The Birds” are not the only
ones getting especial attention
in Newton County! Let’s not

extending us in keeping th2
stores open tomorrow (Friday)

us every opportunity to get in
that last minute Christmas
Shopping. The best possible
way we can say “Thank You”, |
is to SHOP AT HOME, and
keep our dollars in the home
town cash registers! |
Many friends are glad to
learn that Virgil Piper and Mrs.
Henry Anderson, recent sur
gery patients in Atlanta hos- |
pitals, have returned home; and
are wishing them a rapid re
covery. We learned with re
gret of our good neighbor, Dr.
J. R. Sams’ hospitalization at
Emory Hospital on the same
floor, sth iast, where our |
brother Belmont Dennis, ré- |
mains critically ill. '
we join hosts of other friends |
in deepest sympathy to Judge|
William T. Dean and his fam- |
ily of Conyers in the recent|
loss of his beloved wife, the
former Miss Sara Will Cowan, |
whose walk in -life made this|
world a better place in which |
to live. Our sympathy also to|
the families of Mrs. George T.!
Wells; Mrs. Victoria Cartledge. |
two of whose grandsons are a
part of the News family; the
Presley infant’s family, and
Chester N. Parnell, in their be
reavement. |
. To the petitions for the com- |
fort and recovery of our own
loved one, are added those foi |
these, and other friends, for
whom the Christmas Season s
overshadowed by illness, suf=-
sering and heartbreak. }
But, whether in sickness,
health, joy, sorrow, poverty or
wealth—the Star in the East
still beams its message of hope
that can bring the “Peace thaf
Passeth Understanding”, if we
