lite into space this spring. The
Bell Sy Mem, in co-operation
with the National Aeronautics
Space Administration, will
beam telephone calls, data and
television signals via this
space vehicle.
The satellite will be pow
ered with some 3.600 solar
cells and contains more than

NEWS
Troop 720
PORTERDALE — On Feb
ruary 10. 1962 Scout Troop No.
720 of Girl Scouts of America
met at the clubroom in t h e
Anderson Building at Porter
dale at six o’clock with bed
rolls and enthusiasm. When we
were organized, we went skat
' ng and afterwards went to the
Tastee-Freez for another treat.
When we came back to t h e
I Scout Room, we entertained
j ourselves and our leaders until
about three o’clock the next
| morning.
After a breakfast prepared by
the cooks in charge, we went to
our Sunday Schools and met at
ten-forty-five to attend the
morning worship service at the
Julia A. Porter Memorial Meth
odist Church.
Back in our Scout Room, we
gathered up bedrolls and be
longings and went to our homes.
We want to thank Mrs. Leo
nard Bowman and Mrs. W. H.

The changing economic pic

has brought Newton, as well as

subsequent widening of inter
i ests as we share ideas and ideals
| with these newcomers, who so

! blessings they bring us.
The MacGregor Division of
Brunswick Company has given
, us many new citizens, among
whom are Mr. and Mrs. How
ard Bernard, who make their
. home in the Capes Aoartments.
Mr. Bernard, a native of Cin
' cinnati, Ohio, is supervisor of
; the gold ball finishing deoart
men<t of the Brunswick Com
-1 oany, with whom he has been
for 22 vears in Ohio. Among
his hobbies are bowling, spec
tator sports and reading.
Mrs. Bernard, also a Cincin- :
nati native, shares her hus- j
band’s interest in bowling and
spectator sports, and in addi
tion enjoys music and swim
ming.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Harwell,
both natives of Newton Coun
ty, are not considered new
comers; but, we are happy to
welcome them “home” again.
They have recently returned
from Miami Beach. Fla. to
make their home with Mrs. Bill
Harwell, their mother, on
Thompson Ave.
Mr. Harwell is affiliated
with Connersville Casket Co.,
for whom he is a sales repre
sentative.
They both enjov spectator
sports: and Mrs. Harwell also
names fishing, swimming and
bridge, as hobbies.
The Harwells, who are P-es
bvterians. have one son. Ens.
Coooer Harwell, who is cur
rentlv stat'oned in Japan, with
the U. S Navy.

Mens Bible class were hosts to
their wives, and the ladies of the
Eva Mask Bible class on Wednes
day, February 14.
Mrs. Zed Steele assisted the
young people in preparing and ser
ving the delicious meal. About
thirty-five guests were present.

The February meeting of the
Green Thumb Garden Club was
held at the home of Mrs. Hugh
Steele, Mrs. Mildred Moore
serving as Co-Hostess.

was served during a brief so
cial time. Mrs. Rex Rhodes,
visitor, was welcomed by mem
bers.
Mrs. Tom Freeman, Ways and
Means Chairman, reported ex
cellent cooperation by Green
Thumb members on Dinners
served to the Covington Lions
Club. Funds from this project
will be used by Mrs. Walker
Harris and her committee for
the beautification of Ficquett
school grounds.
One hundred dollars was vot
ed to be used this spring on
planting the inside court. The
Ficquett School has been a con
tinuing project for several years
of the Green Thumb Garden
Club.
Plans for the Garden Club
convention to be held this year
at Jekyll Island, Ga. April 4. 5,
and 6th, were made, and a
workshop for members will be
held on March 7th with Mrs.
Anne Cox, from Social Circle.

Mrs. Grace Fedder was voted
to fill the unexpired term of
Mrs. Hugh Steele, and Mrs.
Grace Phillips was named
chairman of the sunshine com
mittee.
Mrs. Blake Armstrong gave
ar. interesting lecture on the
monthly Horticulture. Her sub
ject was the “Care and Cul
ture of Phoetinia Serrulata, and
Phoetinia Glabra.” She display
ed and discussed specimens of
both.
