THIS AND THATI
A once familiar face at Newton County high basketball
games will be missing since the death of Hayden R. Christian,
Tuesday* Mr. Christian had been ill for sometime. He was
the father of Hayden Christian, Jr., an outstanding center on
former Newton High Rams team. The elder Christian at
tended all the games when his son played and continued to
travel to the games for years after until sickness forced his
travel curtailment.
Coach Ronald Bradley and Billy Shaw each received a
“shouldercade” ride in the Region 4AA tourney last week at
Gainesville. Bradley was hoisted by the players on Friday
night after the Rams win over Briarcliff, and Shaw got the
same treatment on Saturday evening after the finals.
From 1950 to 1960 the number of women golfers in the
United States increased by 44 pct., according to Robert H.
Boyle .. • Forsyth County’s tall sister-brother girl basketball
players in the Gainesville tourney were Mary and Jimmy
Hammond. Miss Hammond is about 5 ft. 11 inches and
brother Jimmy is a 6 ft. 8 incher on Coach D. B. Carrol's
teams . . . Premier Fidel Castro attended a baseball game
Sunday in Cuba and batted against the two starting pitchers.
What an American fast-baller wouldn’t have given for a
chance to pitch to the Bearded Premier? . . .
Both Newton Cage Teams, Boys and Girls, now
have a total of 55 victories thus far this season. The girls
slate is now 28-2 and the boys 27-3 . . . And by the way, the
Rams have yet to lose a game on the new Gainesville gym
nasium floor- They have won six straight in the two tour
naments held in 1960 and 1962 . . .

person of Billy Shaw. Shaw
scored 74 points in the three
games that led to the Rams
successful defense of their re

An important rebound in the

a sensational 66.6 per cent av
erage. Hart County hit only 14
of 44 for a 32 per cent average.

4AA Tourney Notes
Coach Ronald Bradley and

glad it was to you.’’ Briarcliff
Coach Ray Hambrick also said
the same thing after the Rams’
semi-final victory Friday
night.

While mentioning Hambrick’s
team, you can bet that they
