। about silhouettes.
Silhouette changes this
summer will be subtle this sum
mer, She said. There is a good
and not-so-good line for every
woman. Fortunately, this sum
mer’s fashion has line appeal
for every figure type. There is
so much leeway in the fashion
silhouette that milady can
choose the ones most suitable
for her.
The silhouettes can be ex
pected to be between two ex
tremes. Fashion designers have
dubbed the extremes as “the
spare look” and the “ladylike
and young” silhouettes. The
“spare look” silhouette is all
shape, no frills, strictly tailor
ed, sleeveless, fabrics with
character and the way smart
women love to dress. The “lady
like and young” silhouette in
cludes softer fabrics, softer
skirts, softer necklines and all
all the variations in between.
Scarves, cowls and now op
ened-up necklines are part of
the feminine look. The sleeve-
less, short jacket is an impor-
I tant part of the costume. The
, Capital A shaped shirt is good
with the spare look.
The summer silhouette moves
। closer to the body for alluring
1 motion, achieved by cut, shap
ing and fabric.
Color is an important part of
fashions and next week I want
to report on the colors to be ex
pected in summer fashions.
Non-Food Items Charged
To Food Bill
When you get the blues be
cause you feel your grocery bill
is unreasonably high, you can
get some consolation from the
fact that many of the items in
the basket are non-food items.
Just for curiosity sometimes,
check the number of non-food
items that are purchased in the
food markets these days. You’ll
most certainly find drug sup
plies, hardware items, home
permanent kits, hosiery and
many other such items. This
is not to say offering such item-,
in the grocery market is bad
It simply means that it doesn’t
seem right for the shopper to
charge off such items as the cost
of food.
Freezing Strawberries
Who doesn’t enjoy straw
berry short cake or strawberry
I preserves?
The vines will soon be load
ed with delicious red berries!
I Let’s take time to put some of
those luscious berries in t h e
I food freezer to enjoy year -
। round.
To freeze quality berries.
I start with a recommended va
| riety. Allow the berries to stay
on the vine until they are fully
; developed and ripe. Pick the
I berries while they are still firm,
placing them in shallow pans.
i Usually, it’s best to spread
i these out in a clean, cool place
■ in the home to allow for fur
■ ther ripening and mellowing.
•Just six hours will improve the
j quality. Wash the berries care
: fully in several changes of cold
water and remove the caps.
Berries may be frozen whole
or sliced in a syrup or a dry
i sugar pack. For the purposes,
J the sliced berries are preferred,
using the dry sugar pack. To
prepare the berries, slice into
a bowl and sprinkle sugar over
, them — using one part sugar
| to six part berries. Allow these
to set until a sirup is formed.
This should take about 10 min
utes.
Package in moisture - vapor
resistant rigid containers. Use
the size container most suited
THE COVINGTON NEWS
for your family. Leave head
space. Fasten the package air
tight, label quick freeze and
keep stored at 0 degrees F. until
ready to use.
Now, if you prefer freezing
whole berries, just coat the
berries with one part sugar to
four part berries or cover them
with a 50 per cent sirup after j
packaging.
You might consider mashing j
.ome of the berries and freez- !
ing them to be used later in ice
cream or other dishes calling
for mashed berries. Too, you
can use this to make fresh:
strawberry jam throughout the
year. The whole berries can be
removed from the freezer and
made into delicious strawberry
preserves anytime during the
year.
This Week's Tip
To make strawberry pre-1
serves, may I suggest a favorite
recipe.
Dissolve nine cups sugar in
one cup water, in a large pre
serving kettle. Place this on the
range and bring to a rolling
boil. Add three level quarts of
berries that have been wash
ed, capped and drained. When
this comes back to a rolling
boil, boil 15 min. One secret lies .
in not stirring the berries, but!
shaking the container. When 15
minutes is up, pour the contents
into a shallow pan and skim.
Continue shaking the pan oc
casionally until the berries are
cool.
The shaking is the secret of
success; it causes the berries
to absorb the sirup and remain
plump and whole. When the
berries are cold, pack into pre
heated jars and cover with
hot paraffin. Store in a dark,
dry cool, place.

A specially rewarding trip to
view Georgia’s spring beauty'
is a visit to the Roosevelt Lit

Springs, in its setting of state
ly pines, dogwoods and native
flowering shrubs, followed by
a drive across Roosevelt Scenic

This paved road traverses the
mountain ridge from a point a <
