How so Give Your Kitchen
A Much "Brighter Face"
The kitchen has become the
Pivotal point of family living.
It's a place where the house
wife spends most of her waking
and working hours, a cooking,
washing and storage center. It
often does double duty for din
ing. It may also serve as side
or rear entrance to the dwell
ing.
As the scene of so many dif
ferent activities, the kitchen
should be one of the brighter
spots in the building. However,
in many homes — particularly
older ones — this is not the
ease.
If so. a "face lifting” is in or
der. A variety of pleasant
transformations can be achiev
ed with wood paneling.

si According to the Southern
. I Pine Association, the "panelier”
-1 should strive for visual ef
{ i sects which complement the
. । contours of the room. In the
t process he can create a per
-; manent wall surface — one
? that holds up under rugged
■ wear and tear and which re
quires virtually no maintenance
. Such results are possible for a
j nominal investment.
- As a first essential step, care
, ful consideration should be
r given to the selection of lum
; ber. If the lumber dealer h a s
, measurements of the room and
t a rough sketch, he can figure
. j out the requirements. Paneling
is available in clear lumber for
a sophisticated setting, or
. knotty for rustic charm.
Proper seasoning of paneling is
a basic ingredient of perma
nence. This means lumber that’s
properly dried and "pre
shrunk" before being surfaced
n to final size. All grades of
” Southern Pine paneling carry
- mandatory 12 percent moisture
e content limits. Not only does
e this dry “pre-shrunk condition
- assure a wall surface that will
e stay tight and smooth, but it
d also has a favorable effect on the
- retention of stains and other
finishes..
a After delivery, lumber should
i be stacked on narrow separa
_ tor sticks for conditioning to
e the room atmosphere. To per
petuate its dry condition back's
and ends should be processed
s with a "penetrating sealer” or
d other moisture resistant coat
e ing, prior to use.
g Paneling is usually applied
r horizontally or vertical — the
_ choice depending on the size
* I and shape of the room. If the
: ceiling is high, a horizontal
. placement will make the room
look lower and wider. Vertical
placement has the opposite ef
fect and is desirable in long,
low ceilinged areas.
Room logistics also figure
i in choice of finish and color.
Cool colors, like delicate grays
and pale blues, make the walls
seem more remote and the
room larger. Warm rich colors
: bring the walls closer, make
I the atmosphere more intimate.
It's no problem to achieve
' the desired effect. The sun
i shiny golden hue of Southern
Pine is an appetizing kitchen
i color, and to leave it unchang
-1 ed, a “natural” finish should
I be applied. If color changes are
I in order, the preferred shade
j can readily be obtained through
i stains. These forms of finish
j are transparent to leave the
I grain texture exposed. The
\ applied color looks just as nat
| ural as the wood’s own.
A good stain finish on well
seasoned wood paneling should
last 20 to 25 years. No main
tenance is required other than
an occasional dusting. Finger
prints can be erased by a sim
ple swish of a damp cloth.
Poor soil preparation is a
major reason for unhealthy
shrubs in Georgia. Nearly all
soils in the state need the in
corporation of organic matter
before shrubs are planted, says

_ aid E. Smith.

Launching Your Personality
Toward Successful Horizons
By Audrey Morgan ।

We hear so much today about
launching pads, space ships and
missies. A great deal of money
and attention is put on outer
space. These attract everyone’s
attention, but the thing that
every boy and girl is vitally in
terested in is what the future
holds for them, personally.
Success in life. is tied very
closely with what a person
really is, or his personality.
Surveys, studies and statistics
can predict pretty closely how
a person needs to prepare to be
a success. Os the people who
do not succeed, 93 percent fail
because they haven’t learned
how to live harmouniously with
others.
Regardless of what a person
may say, he really wants, above
all else, to be a success in life.
Many young people today say
"We really want to be some
thing. We are willing to work
to achieve this goal. We are not
interested in short-t im e
schemes to get things or at
tention. What we really want
are real ways of achieving last
ing success.”
One of the first considerations
is that no one lives to himself
for long. We must learn to live
harmoniously with others. We
do things with and for others.
They do things for us. ^e
want to learn to live happily
with others. We are greatly
concerned with ways to do this.
At home we want to share in
the responsibilities and chores
as well as the conveniences and
pleasures. We need to strive
hard to understand our family
members. In this way we will
gain a better insight into our
selves «s well as people outside
our homes.
There are some life-long hab
its we need to establish to de
velop an attitude of happiness
and success. Many of them are
not easy but are certainly
worth our effort. Cultivate hap
piness through kindness to
everyone regardless of the way
we are treated. Try to play fair
with everyone. Treat others as

Popular Fish J
There are more different 1
jpinions about when and where
i catfish will bite best than .
here are about what make (
jp a beautiful girl, perhaps be- }
-ause to a great many adult
Americans beautiful girls and ]
fishing ate quite important.
Some say catfish hit best on
i rising river, some say the
best time is when the waters
are going down. Some sax fish
in the current, others claim the
only spot to dunk bait is in the
eddys, or backwater areas.
Old ictalurus lacustris, the
channel cat. is so named be
cause of a proclivity for swift
water, and for him the current
is the only spot to fish with
any sustained hope of success,
according to the Mercury out
board fishing men, who have
done a great deal of research on
the question.
The blue cat, however, going
under the name of ictalurus
furcatus, prefers larger lakes
and slow moving or quiet wa
ters in rivers to the fast flow
ing stuff his spotted cousin
likes. Some people liken a
channel cat to a dancer doing
the jitterbug, while a blue cat
is dancing the waltz.
The slowest moving member
of the catfish family is the
flathcad, or mudcat, who, like
some members of the human
race, sports a mouth that is
bigger than any other part of
his body. He can exist, and
seems to enjoy doing so, in wa
ters that would turn a chan
nel cat away in pure disgust.
Without doubt all catfish hit
It depends upon what we really
are and what we do. If we will
give to life the best we have,
the best will return to us. Then
let us get busy now and launch
our personalities toward fu
ture successful horizons.
Cotton Planting
Take the soil’s temperature
before planting cotton, advises
Extension Agronomist Larry
Torrance. Cotton seed germi
nates poorly at temperatures
lower than 70 degrees. Seed
lings from seed that germinate
at low temperatures grow more
slowly and less vigorously than
those from seed that germinate
at 70 to 85 degrees.
better at night than they do in
the sunlight. It’s a built-in pro
tection device that helps the
fisherman. if he’s smart enough
to recognize it. Beginning right
after dusk and usually lasting
until dawn, catfish feed vorac
iously on just about anything
that moves. They prowl more
at night too, seeking food, and
a fisherman does not have to
be quite so selective as to his
fishing spot.
The top bait” — anything!
No doubt the best idea is to
take along every kind of bait
available Then the fisherman
will be ready for whatever taste
the fish have that particular
night. However, most will agree
that bait works better than non
live stuff, under most cir
cumstances.
After all, it's all opinion any
way.
