My Friend —John Jernigan
By Mis* Katherine McGath. Oxford. Ga.
Written 10 years ago by a friend of John Jernigan's
who has since passed away.
To your mother, you're a baby
To your daddy, just a lad
To Sara, you’re her sweetheart,
To your boys, their dad —
But no matter how many relations
May be placed on end to end
My tie is just the closest because
You are my friend
To your clients, you're their lawyer
A pleading at the bar
To your pals, you're a buddy
To a golfer (you’re par)
No matter how many duties
Life may upon you send
You always have the time
To keep on being — Just my friend.
The course of life may take you
Very near or very far
You may be a judge, senator, or just grandpa
No matter how many honors
On you may descend
I know that you will always keep
On being — Just a friend.
THIS AND THAT!
Buddy Baker says that a Newton-Henry County Colt
League has been organized for the coming season and that
four teams are entered. They are Covington, Porterdale,
McDonough and Ola. The slate starts in May, with the com
plete schedule to be announced later . . . And by the way,
Covington Mills is sponsoring boys’ teams in the Little
League, Pony League and Colt Leagues this summer. Ditto,
the same for Bibb Manufacturing Co. at Porterdale . . .
Last week we mentioned that a well-known sports writer
had picked the Cincinnati Reds fourth in the National Lea
gue race this season. Well, Billy Crowell in the Bibb Recorder
last week, picked the Reds for a sixth place finish. He names
the Yanks and Dodgers as the winners . . .
When Homer F. Sharp was a student at Emory Univer
sity he played on a basketball team off campus. A member
of that team was Dean Rusk, now the Secretary of State
. . . Golf shafts and baseball bats are now being made of
Fiberglas. However, baseball rules state that bats must be
made of wood . . . American Junior Bowling Congress’ mon
thly magazine (April 1962) has an article written by Ed Rick
er of the Gold Crown Lanes in Covington. The title of the
article is “A Coach Writes.” Three photos accompany the
article.
According to a late statistical report 35.875.000 persons
participated in recreational boating in 1961. The report says
that two and one-fourth billion dollars was spent at retail
establishments for new and used boats, motors, fuels, access
orie, repairs, maintenance, etc. . . For you older sports
fans here’s away of facing your age: You’re getting old
when you can remember that your high school had only
one cheerleader! . . .
Masters Golf tournament officials were most fair in their
awarding extra money to the three players — Arnold Pal
mer, Gary Player and Dow Finsterwald — who engaged'in
the playoff on Monday following their three-way tie. Each
got an extra $1,116.34 for their playoff.

of the book is “Coach’s Guide To

Coach Pinholster dedicated
the book to five of his best

the dedicatory page the word

“This book is dedicated to

Stephen Schmidt, Wendell
Crowe, Pat Stephens,

Pat have exhibited (in al! col

life) a courage, a tenacity, a
loyalty, and an unselfishness
that epitomizes the great qual

Rams Win sth Straight;
Edwards Takes 4th Victory
By 808 GRF.ER
Steady Stan Edwards and the
Newton County Rams baseball
team continued their unbeaten
ways on Legion Field Tuesday
with a 10-1 trouncing of
Chamblee, a Region 4AA West
foe.
Edwards, now boasting four
of the five victories scored by
Coach Ronald Bradley’s boys,
gave up one hit Tuesday. Only
last week he went 11 innings
for one victory and then came
back two days later and won
another in relief.
Wielding the big stick at the
plate for the Rams were Terry
Smith and Bob Wheeler, each
getting two for two. Tim Christ
ian, sensational Freshman, bang
ed a triple to aid the cause.
The Rams scored four runs
in the first inning and coasted
the rest of the way behind the
brilliant hurling of Edwards.
This afternoon (at 4 p. m.)
the Rams will host Jackson.
Tomorrow the local team will
go to Monroe for a return
match. Tuesday the Rams will
journey down to Baldwin
County at Milledgeville.

Marietta Meet
Harry Cowan on games of
171-163-177 was the star for
the Holliday Lanes House team
at the Georgia State Tourna
ment. The following rounded
out the rest of the team:
Clyde Young 169-163-143,
Richard Ridling 159-146-156,
Jim Parnell 141-138-171, John
Bledsoe 132-151-155.
The conditions at Marietta
remained most unpopular with
the bowlers and all we can say
is, that we were ‘here and will
just have to wait until next
year. Howard Johnson Res
taurant, Augusta, Georgia leads
in the team division with a

for additional distance in which
to slow down by making light,
short repeated applications of
the brakes.
