Foreign Markets of Vital
Concern to Georgia Farmers
The world market continues
to be a highly important out
let and source of income for
Georgia farmers, a state-by
state study just completed by
the U. S. Department of Agri
culture show's.
Georgia farmers supplied tl\e
export market with products
worth about $lO2 million in the
1960-61 fiscal year, the study
indicates. Principal commodities
exported w'ere cotton, tobacco
and poultry products.
“Even though our farms are
a long way from foreign mar
kets, through foreign trade the
two are brought close togeth
er,” said W. I. Golden, econo
mist on the staff of the Coop
erative Extension Service, Un
iversity of Georgia College of
Agriculture.
“Foreign markets are giving
the state’s farmers a much bet
ter outlet and income than
would be possible from the home
market alone We need to con
tinue to keep our eyes on
events effecting foreign mar
kets because these events
have a real dollars-and-cents
meaning to Georgia's agricul
ture.”
U. S. agricultural exports
are running at record levels.

Last year, $5 billion worth of
U. S. farm products were ex
ported. Sixty million acres of
U. S. cropland are producing
for export. This is about 12
times the harvested acreage of
Georgia. Mr. Golden said.
For many farmers, the for
eign market has become a ma
jor outlet. In 1960-61 exports
equaled half of the nation’s
production of cotton, wheat,
rice and dried peas; two- fifths
of the output of soybeans and
tallow; a third of the produc
tion of tobacco, hops, flaxseed
and nonfat dry milk; a fifth
of the dried whole milk out
put; and a sixth of the feed
grains sold off farms. Other
important exports included
fruits, poultry meat and vari
ety meats.
The USDA study, in apprais
ing the stake of Georgia farm
ers in foreign trade, showed
that the state’s equivalent share
of the nation’s agricultural ex
ports was made up of the fol
lowing:
Field crops, $86,765,000; veg
etables, $801,000; fruits and
nuts, $3,112,000; dairy products,
$1,305,000; poultry and poul
try products, $6,396,000; and
other livestock, products, $4,-
399,000.
On the basis that foreign
trade is a two- way street,
Georgia also plays a part in the
imports of agricultural pro
ducts. Many of such imports
are noncompetitive consumer
items such as coffee, tea, co
coa, spices, bananas, etc. Al
though competing agricultural
products also come in from
Abroad, Georgia’s agriculture is

far ahead in the exchange since
the stale’s share of agricultural
exports is over three and one
half times its share of com
peting imports.
Many agricultural com
modity groups in the United
States are working closely with
the USDA In efforts to build
exports even further, Mr. Gold
en pointed out. In areas such
as Western Europe, business Is
booming and customers have
the money to buy more from
U. S. farmers. The biggest
problem in such countries is
access to markets. Trade bar
riers often limit the amounts
that American agriculture can
sell, he continued.
One of the national objec
tives of the USDA is to arrive
at an international trade pro
gram that gives U. S. agricul
ture better bargaining power
so it can sell even more active
ly in foreign markets.
Georgia ranks second in tthe
nation in number of forest
fires. Only Mississippi had
more than Georgia’s 8,335 fires
in 1960, according to Extension
Forester George D. Walker.
