RAMS SET MANY RECORDS!
The Newton Ram baseball team set many records during
the past regular season and 4AA playoff. It marked the first
tame that a Ram team had finished the season undefeated,
first regional playoff title, first time entered in the state
tourney, and Stanley Edwards set a record with nine wins
and no losses in one season. For Coach Ronald Bradley it
was a record for him as he now has piloted his teams (base
ball and basketball) to Regional titles.
THIS AND THATI
They are now reporting that pitcher Whitey Ford of
the Yankees was on the trading block at the end of the
1959 season. We don’t believe Whitey could win for any
team in baseball except the Yankees . . . Dick Donovan of
Cleveland may become the American League’s first 30-game
winner since Lefty Grove turned the trick back in the early
19305. Donovan has already won 7 games and lost none for
Cleveland . . , Frankie Cook of the Rocky Plains Little
League baseball team is quite a strong boy. He banged a
homer over the fence at the LL ball park in his first game
this season . . . Dennis Wagner is now back in a local base
ball loop after a fling in pro ball with the Pirate organiza
tion . . . Bobby Matocha, third-sacker for the Covington
Trojans of the minor league, made one of the most spec
tacular catches seen in local LL play this season Saturday
night. He speared a foul-ball with one hand to thwart a
rally.
One of the better moves and innovations of the New
Atlanta Crackers management was the placing of the players’
name on his back. It sure helps a lot in identifying certain
players . . . Leo Durocher is building a $150,000 home in
canyon section just outside Los Angeles. Leo told a friend
that “it only costs a quarter to go first class.” . . . Deaths
in the fight ring are not new and the recent incident that
claimed the life of Benny (Kid) Paret was’t the first to
happen. Sugar Ray Robinson knocked out Jimmy Doyle in
Cleveland in 1947 and Doyle died as a result . . .
Chattanooga Moccasin coach Tommy Bartlett has resigned
to take the freshman coach position at the University of
Tennessee. Bartlett is the coach who signed Newton County’s
Billy Shaw to a University of Chattanooga grant-in-aid . . .
Charley Britt, now a bit player in several TV shows in
cluding the “Ozzie and Harriet” and “Tales of Wells Fargo”
series, was literally discovered while he was working as
a lifeguard at Jekyll Island during a summer . . .
Professional wrestlers are constantly plagued by the
question, “Is wrestling fixed?” When TV Guide posed the
question to Fred Bozic, a New York wrestling villain, Bozic I
offered this explanation: “You know,” he said, “I never saw '
a wrestling program on television end in the middle of a
match. They go jut long enough to fill out the time and
when the watch says it’s near the end . . . floppo! Somebody
throws somebody and it’s all over, and on comes the com
mercial.”
A high school basketball team that won their state title
will not defend that title next year; in fact, they’ll not have ■
a cage team next year. The Colfax (N. C.) school will be
consolidated with two others next season. They won the
Class A diadem recently-

Rams Win 4AA Crown
BY 808 GREER
(News Sporia Editor)
The Newton County Ram baseball team won the Region
4AA playoff Thursday afternoon on Legion Field with a
5-4 victory over Gainesville. The NCHS nine had won the
first game of the best-of-three game series on Wednesday
at Gainesville 1 to 0 in a six-inning tilt cut short by rain.
Coach Ronald Bradley now
has notched his athletic belt
at Newton High with his second
regional title in one year, having
steered his basketball team to
the Region 4AA diadem in late
February. His baseball boys are
now eligible for the State AA
tournament, the dates of which
will be announced sometime
Sunday afternoon.
Thursdays’ game started off
like it would be an easy triumph
for the NCHS team, but by the
time the sixth inning rolled
around and the Gainesville
team five runs behind the vis
itors got busy. They pushed
over four tallies which includ
ed a triple and a ringing dou
ble that plated two of the five
runs.
Lee Campbell, lefthander on
the Ram pitching staff, held the
Red Elephants at bay through
the first five innings of the en
counter. He ran into some trou
ble in the sixth and Stanley Ed
wards was called to the mound.
After permitting one run to
score he got the final man to
roll to Terry Smith at third.
Campbell actually won his
own game from a rightfieid
position in the final inning.
With one out and two base run
ners on the move for the plate,
Campbell speared a line drive
and threw to first baseman Tim
Christian to complete a game
ending double play. The lefty
also batted in his team’s first
run of the game in the second
inning after Billy Shaw had
singled and taken second on an
infield out.
Tim Christian and Edwards
had the two longest hits of the
day for the Rams. Each had a
triple with Christian’s driving
in two runs in the fourth frame.
Leading hitters in the fray
for the local squad were Terry
Rutledge, Henry Baker and Ed
wards with two-for-three.
Newton County now keeps its
record intact for the season
and playoffs, now having cop
ped 12 victories without a loss.
