Mansfield Lions Program Heads Soil Week In County
Dr. Freeman Was Main
Speaker On "Stewardship"
Highlighting the observance of Soil Stewardship Week
in Newton County was an appropriate program by the Mans
field Lions Club Monday evening at which the main speaker
was Dr. G. Ross Freeman, Chaplain of the Georgia Asso
ciation of Soil Conservation District Supervisors.
Attending the program were I farmers, businessmen, minist

Lions Club weekly meeting Monday at the community

After the introduction of the
guest list by Robert (Red)
Stanton, District Governor of
Georgia Lions International,
the Reverend Clyde Lancaster,
pastor of the Loganville Meth
odist Church, and Chaplain of
the Upper Ocmulgee Conser
vation District, introduced the
guest speaker.
Dr. Freeman impressed upon
the assemblage the importance
of soil and water conservation.
He traced the history of man
kind’s battle to conserve the
soil and challenged his hearers
“to do everything in your pow
er to leave the land better and
richer for our posterity.”
Honored guests at the meet
ing were members of Mrs. H.
C. Robertson’s class at Mans
field Junior high school. Five
of her students entered the
District Soil Essay Contest and
three of those five won awards
in the county-wide contest.

For Aidmore Hosp.
An estimated 800 Georgia
Elks and their wives attended
the 61st annual convention of
the Georgia Elks Association
at the Desoto Hotel in Savan
nah last week. The convention
ended Saturday evening May
19 with a banquet and grand
ball.
Elected to head the associa
tion for the coming year were
H. L. Williamson of Albany,
president; John S. Andrews of
Dalton, executive vice presi
dent; Ben Perry of Buckhead
(Atlanta), tiler; and Roderick
M. McDuffie, secretary-trea
surer.
Trustees for Aidmore Hos
pital for Crippled Children in
Atlanta were also elected dur
ing the convention.
Named to five-year terms
were Robert G. Pruitt of the
Buckhead lodge, Jack McGib
boney of Covington, Virgil
Taylor of East Point, Hubert
Moore of Toccoa, Oscar Bor
ochoff of Rome, J. Clayton
Burke of Atlanta, Roy Mill
wood of Gainesville, Dr. O. S.
Gross of Vidalia, and Dr. R. C.
Shepard of Lafayette.
Named to three-year terms
were J. W. Loop of Douglas,
Dr. K. D. Grace of LaGrange,
B. J. Reeves of Griffin, and
Henry Fox of Thomasville.
Robert G. Pruitt, chairman
of the board of trustees of
Aidmore, reporting on the
hospital’s operation during the
past fiscal year, said that over
$150,000 was contributed by
Elks and Aidmore Auxiliary
members for operation of the
hospital.
Seven hundred and twenty
five crippled children from all
over the state were admitted
to the hospital during the past
year, Pruitt said.
The association adopted a
budget of $9,720 for the com
ing fiscal year. Os that amount
$1,500 is a contribution from
the Elks National Foundation
which goes to Aidmore Hos
pital in Atlanta.
Present were Mrs. Robertson,
Suzan Elliott, Priscilla Prosser,
Dolores Davis, Rufus Spears,
Jr., and Bill Hodges.

Elliott McElroy Receives Degree
Dr. Harlloe Branch, Jr., pre
sident of The Southern Com
pany, one of the South’s lead
ing electric utility companies,
was the speaker at commence
ment exercises at Davidson Col
lege, Davidson, N. C., Sunday,
May 27th.
The commencement exercises,
Davidson’s 125th, were preced
ed by an 11:00 a. m. Baccalau
reate Sermon delivered by the
Reverend John Oliver Nelson,
Ph. D., Litt. D., of the Divinity
School of Yale University.
The commencement exercises
followed lunch on the college
campus for seniors and parents
and the Academic Procession at
4:15 p. m.
Elliott Watson, Covington,
was awarded the A. B. Degree.
At Davidson he was a philoso
phy major, member of the foot
ball band, the Classics Club and
the YMCA. He was also winner
of a Dana Scholarship.
Dr. Branch, a Davidson man
class of 1927 - was one of six
to be awarded honorary doctor
degrees during the graduation
exercises. His was the LL. D.
