Multiple sclerosis is a chron
ic, progressive, disabling dis
ease for which cause and cure
remain unknown. It is estimat
ed that 500.000 Americans suf
fer from MS and related dis
eases. Pathologically, MS de
stroys patches of the soft, fatty
myelin sheath insulating fibers
of the central nervous system.
The myelin is replaced by hard
scar tissue plaques. Nerve im
pulses directing movement,
vision, hearing, speech, and
balance may be distorted or
even blocked. MS characteris
tically progresses in a series of
unpredictable attacks, often
leading to total disability. It
is most prone to strike young
adults in the 20-to-40 age
bracket.

LAWN DISEASES
Diseases such as dollar spot,
brown patch and leafspot have
disfigured many lawns in
Georgia in the last two
years. Leafspot causes
variously shaped areas
on the blades of grass to turn
tan or dark brown in color.
Dollar spot starts off with
small patches of turf about the
size of a silver dollar and which
increase in size rapidly. Brown
patch starts off more wide
spread in various patterns
which often interlock in a
pretzel pattern or quarter
moon design! Sprays recom
mended for control of these
diseases are Tersan O-M and
Panogen Turf Spray solutions,
according to Extension Hor
ticulturist Gerald Smith.
