Annual Snow Open Golf
Tournament June 17th
The Ninth Annual Snow Open
Golf Tournament will be held
at the Porterdale Golf Course,
Sunday, June 17th.
Tournament Director Billy.
Crowell says that the course
will be in top condition for the
great local sporting event. "We
anticipate the largest crowd in
the history of the tournament,”
he stated. This year the tour
ney will be limited to the first
108 qualifiers.
All players in championship
flight must qualify before 6 p.
m. Saturday, June 16 The
championship flight will be
split after 18 holes into A, B,
C divisions. Trophies will be
presented to winners, runner
up and consolation in each di
vision.
All players in match play
(flights) may play or post
scores. The winner in each
flight, runner-up and conso
lation winner will receive tro
phies.
Moody Summers of Coving
ton has won the Snow Open
for the past two years. Moody
also won the event in 1958. Al-
I bert Norton is also a three time
। winner of the Snow Open. Win
' ning in 1955, 1956 and 1957.

the open,” Mr. Crowell said
yesterday. Spectators are wel
come and a large gallery is ex
pected to follow the champion
ship play.
"The Snow Open has fin
ished in sudden death 8 out
of 9 tournaments. I’m sure the
spectators will witness some
more fine golf,” Mr. Crowell
added.

Annual Rockdale Jaycee Rodeo
Friday, Saturday at 8 P. M.
The fourth annual Rockdale
Jaycee Rodeo will be held at
the Jaycee Rodeo Arena Fri
day, June 8 and Saturday, June
9 at Conyers. Performances
will be held beginning at 8 p.
m. on these two nights.
The past three rodeos have
held performances on Saturday
night and Sunday afternoon.
Jaycee officials said they be
lieve a Friday night perfor
mance is more desirable than
one on Sunday afternoon. They
expect the change in perfor
mances to help improve atten
dance.
This year’s contest will fea
ture five contests including
bronc and bareback riding, calf
roping, steer wrestling, and
Brahma bull riding.
The highlight of the rodeo is
the always dangerous and ex
citing bull riding event. Some
of the finest prize bulls in the
South are featured in this
context.

The Newton County Rams
baseball team found that play
ing two games in a half-day
was too much for them and
they lost the State Class AA
title to West Rome High Wed
nesday at Thomaston 11 to 4.
The NCHS nine had won their
first game earlier in the day
over Tifton 3- 2.
West Rome hurlers Don Law
and Jerome Ayer led their
team to the title, the winners
second state crown in three
years. Law hit a long home
run off Ram starter Lee Camp
bell to put his team in front in
the first inning 5-0. Newton
never came close after that.
Vanning the offense for the
NCHS team were Campbell
with two doubles; Terry Smith,
a double and a single; and
Ronnie Lynch with two timely
singles.
Players named to the AA all
star team were Jerome Ayer,
Don Law, Gerry Law. Jimmy
Harris and Chris Warren of
West Rome; Stan Edwards,
Ronnie Lynch, Terry Smith

Rodeo tickets are now on
sale for $1.50 each. Children
under school age will be ad
mitted free. Anyone who would

Girls between the ages of 12
and 21 years old who would like
to enter the annual Rodeo
Queen contest may call A. M.
Whitaker at 483-8707 or 483-
7330. The contest will be judg
ed on horsemanship, costume
and beauty. The queen will be
crowned Saturday night by
Trudi Gamble, last year’s
queen.
The annual rodeo parade wiH
be held Saturday afternoon in
downtown Conyers beginning at
3 p. m. Any organization which
would like to participate in the
parade may contact A. M. Whi
taker.
Presbyterian Bible School
Bible School at the First
Presbyterian Church of Coving
ton will begin on Friday after
noon. June 8 at 3:30 o’clock. All
children and youth from the
age of 4 through the Interme
diate Department of the Sun
day School are invited to par
ticipate. The opening session
will be held in the Martin Fel
lowship Hall, lasting until 5:00
p. m.
The following week, June 11-
15, Bible School will be in pro
gress from 9:00 a. m. to 11:30
a. m. On Sunday morning,
June 17, there will be a gen
eral assembly during the Sun
day School hour for the pre
sentation of Bible School cer
tificates and in order for the
School to share some of the
activities of the previous week.

Swan Scholarship Goes
To Kenneth McAllister
Kenneth McAllister, an hon
or student at Newton County
High School is the winner of
the Thomas Chalmers Swann
HI Scholarship to Emory At
Oxford for the 1962- 63 school
year.
This scholarship was estab
lished to memory of Thomas
Chalmers Swann 111. This young
man was a student of Newton
County High School and Emory
at Oxford. He was accidentally
killed a few years ago. His mo
ther, Mrs. Frank Miller, pro
vided the scholarship about two
years ago.
This first student to graduate
from Emory at Oxford under
this scholarship is Jerry Stan
dard, a member of the 1962
class.
The scholarship provides
much of the tuition for a year’s
study and the recepient is
known as the Thomas Chalmers
Swann 111 Scholar.
Kenneth McAllister is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. C P. Mc-
Allis f er of Newton County. His
father is manager of the State
FFA camp located in this
county. Kenneth is a member
of the Methodist Church and
plans to study pharmacy.

Livingston’s baseball team
held to its lead in the Middle
Georgia League as thev wal
loped the Forsyth team Sunday
by a 21-4 score. The Livings
ton record is now 6 wins and
1 loss. Stewart downed Mon
ticello Sunday 7-6 and the
other game involving Halls
boro and Juliette was not re
ported.
Giles Hall of Livingston was
the winning hurler Sunday.
Red Harper hit a home run to
van his team’s attack at the
plate.

Monticello will visit Livings
ton for a game at 2:30 P. M.
