Forestry Offkia! Urges Fanners
To Grow Trees for Extra Income
There is money in growing
trees as crops but the best way
to do this on farm woodlots is
as a sideline to other farm
work
This is the opinion of E. A
Davenport. Jr., chairman of
the Georgia Tree Farm Com
mittee and conservation for
ester for Union Bag-Camp
Paper Corp.
Davenport said that when a
farmer manages his woodlot as
a sideline to regular farming
"he is able to do his forestry
work when it suits him best.
And he can make the most ef
ficient use of his labor and
equipment."
Davenport hinted that this
is the key to profitable opera
tion farm woodlots of which
there are some 3 1/2 million
in the U. S., averaging about
49 acres each. He said that
the typical farmer with small
sized holdings cannot expect to
earn his living off his woodlot
alone, but he can rely on it for

An employment certificate
from the city or county school

to Georgia Commissioner of La

Necessary forms are available

Under the Georgia law, boys

same applies to girls from 14 to

When school is in session, the
law provides that boys from 12

14 to 16 may work 4 hours a
day after school, 8 hours on
Saturdays and holidays, but not
after 9:00 p, m. There are no

According to Davenport,
sales of timber from farm
wood lots brought the nation’s
farmers $lB7 million in 1959.
but “this is only about one
third of what it could be if the
woodlands were well-managed
as are other areas of the
farms."
Some 57 006 wood-depen
dent firms, he explained, are
eager to become partners with
farmers in improving the man
agement of farm woodlots.
That is why, he said, the for
est industries are promoting
tree farming and other for
estry conservation programs.
"The problem of the forest
industries and others interest
ed in full and wise use of the
nation's forest resource is to
help bring the farm woods un
der good management as quick
ly as possible," he said.
“We American*; require large
amounts of wood and wood
products in our daily living. In
1961 for instance we used pa
per and paperboard at the rate
of 440 pounds for every man,
woman and child. To make
this, more than forty million
cords of pulp wood were used.
Then, we also used about 38
billion board feet of lumber,
more than eight billion square
feet of plywood, and millions
of square feet of hardboard
and particleboard.
“These figures give you a
fair idea of the importance of
farm woodlands in the nation's
timber economy and as a po
tential source of income for
farmers. Because farmers own
nearly one third of the na
tion’s productive forest lands,
they are important as produc
ers of timber in a wood-hun
gry nation. With the growing
markets provided by the for
est industries, well-managed
farm forests can become an
important and stable source of
the added income farmers
should have.”
