Bridge Luncheon at Ramsey Home
Lends Interest to Summer Social Scene
Mrs. Spence Ramsey was a
gracious hostess on Friday,
when she entertained members
of her club and guests at a
bright luncheon, at her home
on Floyd Street
Yellow and white were key
noted in the artistic floral ar
rangements which enhanced
the attractive setting. Zinnias
and shasta daisies in the chosen
colors were used to advantage
in the living room; and a
milk glass bowl of shasta
daisies formed the dining ta- (
ble’s centerpiece.
The delicious luncheon was <
served at small tables overlaid . i

Surprise parties never cease
to bring joy and delight, and
such was the occasion on Sun
day, when the lovely country
home of Mr. and Mrs. C. 0.
Nixon, “Green Valley Farm”,
was the scene of a birthday
dinner in honor of Miss Louise
Skelton’s seventy - seventh
birthday.
A dinner invitation from
Mrs. Nixon, Miss Skelton's niece,
set the stage for the event.
Upon arriving at the Nixon’s
home, the occasion’s purpose
was revealed, when Miss Skel
ton was greeted by her three
brothers and other relatives.
Pink and red radiance roses
in artistic arrangements were
used at vantage points to en
hance the attractive living
room setting. Colorful tritoma
was also combined with fern,
to lend floral interest.

Miss Jean Daniel was hon
ored with a birthday party by
her mother in observance of
her ninth birthday.

The table, overlaid with pas
tel green damask, featured the
white embossed birthday cake,
topped with a “Happy Birth
day” inscription in pink, and
a single glowing candle.
Covers were laid for Mr. and
Mrs. T. W. Skelton, W. L.
Skelton and J. L. Skelton,
brothers and sister in law of
the honoree, a niece Mrs. J.
R. Dallas and Mr. Dallas, all
of Atlanta; Miss Skelton and
the hosts.
At the delicious meal’s con
clusion, Miss Skelton was pre
sented with many beautifully
wrapped gifts, in honor of her
birthday.
Throughout the afternoon
numerous friends called to ex
tend congratulations and fel
iciations to the guest of honor,
which perfected the memorable
day.
Young Married
Class Feted
Mr. and Mrs. James B. Hut
chins were hosts Friday night,
July 6, at a cookout for the
Young Married Class of the
First Baptist Church, at their
home on Church Street.
Rucker Ginn led the group in
prayer, after which food and
refreshments were enjoyed.
The group then attended the
movie, “King of Kings”, at the
local theater.
Those attending were — Mr.
and Mrs. Johnny Capes, Mr.
and Mrs. Billy Freeman, Mr.
and Mrs. George Patton, Mr.
and Mrs. Ward Mobley, Mr.
Rucker Ginn, and Mr. and
Mrs. Billy McElreath.
Mrs. Grady Bowden
Was Hostess to
Thompson Circle
PORTERDALE — Fourteen
members of the Laura Thomp
son Circle of the Porterdale
Baptist Church met on July 2
in the basement of the church
with Mrs. Grady Bowden as
hostess at six-thirty. A delici
ous cold plate with apple pie
for dessert was served prior to
the formal meeting. Each mem
ber brought a gift for her
“secret pal” and these names
were revealed during the so
cial period.
Mrs. Archie Patterson pre
sided and Mrs. Lilia Cofer led
in prayer. Minutes of the pre
vious meeting were read and
approved. Mrs. Clara Bennett
gave the report of the trea
sury.
Members voted to send a
“Christmas in August” pack
age to the Cuban Refugees for
their community missions work
for July. Mrs. Bowden and
Mrs. Bennett were named to
serve with Mrs. Bessie Criswell
on this committee.
Reports were made from the
Mission Study and Steward
ship.
Mrs. Lilia Cofer, Prayer
Chairman, read names of the
missionaries on the Prayer
Calendar and asked Mrs. Cofer
to lead the special prayer in
• their behalf.
Mrs. Patterson named the
nominating committee to con
i sist of Mrs. Clarie Bennett.

S. A. Farmer.

of the Tithe”,
Fidelis Matron's Class Held June
Meeting at Green Valley Farms
The picturesque setting for
the June meeting of the Fidelis
Matrons Class, of the First Bap
tist Church, was the beautiful
living room, over looking the
lake and green pastures of
Green Valley Farms, the home
of the Otis Nixons, with Miss
Louise Skelton and Mrs. Nixon
as hostesses.
A beautiful arrangement of
pink and blue hydrangeas cen
tered the lovely table by the
glass sliding doors overlooking
the lake, and underneath an oil
painting of former Governor
Herman Talmadge, the artistic
arrangement, on this table, was
of Gerbia, Shasta and Gloriesa
Daisies.
In the absence of th< Presi
dent, Mrs. W. R. Nunn, Mrs
Belmont Dennis, Teach'r of the
Class, presided over the meet
ing.
Mrs. L. D. Pritchett was
called upon for the opening
prayer, after which the pre
siding officer welcomed the
sixteen present. There were
four visitors who were given a
cordial welcome, Mrs. Harry
Edwards, Mrs. Hal Cannon, Miss
Ida Thompson and Mrs. Fred
Kitchens.
Mrs. James Biggers, Record
ing Secretary, called the roll,
and twelve members respond
ed with Bible Verses. She then
read the minutes of the last
meeting, which were approved
as read. She also read a note
of thanks from Mrs. J. A. Walls,
for cards and remberances
while ill. A beautiful devotional
was given by Mrs. Harry Ed
wards.
The Class expressed regrets
that two members, Mrs. Tom
Heard, and Mrs. E. B. Rogers
were ill at Newton County Hos
pital. They were reported as
resting as well as could be ex
pected.
Mrs. R. B. Yancey reported
having taken gifts to the hos
pital to members who had been
ill. As Treasurer she gave her
report at this time.
Corresponding Secretary, Miss
Louise Skelton, read a note of
thanks from Mrs. Dennis for
cards, and many kindnesses at
the hospital.
She also reported having
written twenty-two notes and
cards: Sympathy, Get-well and
six of them Birthday Cards to
Class Members.
During the business session
the Class voted to study the
book “God’s Psychiatry” by

the Twenty-third Psalm, The
Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Com
mandments and the Beatitudes,
with a short portion being
taught at each meeting.
A special committee was
named by the teacher, to pro
vide suitable games and enter
tainment for the members dur
ing the social hour of the
monthly meetings. Mrs. J. S.
Harris was named chairman,
with Mrs. J. P. Floyd and Mrs.
N. S. Avery as committee mem
bers to work with her.
It was announced that the
four Group Captains would
meet with Mrs. Dennis to work
out a plan to improve Class
activities. They will meet on
Thursday afternoon at 3:30
o’clock at the home of t h e
teacher, along with their Co-

Mrs. Charles Mobley.
There being no further busi
ness, the class meeting was
adjourned. A delightful social
hour followed with M r s. Nix
on, assisted by Mrs. Fred Kit
chens, serving delicious re
freshments consisting of sand
wiches and dainty iced cakes
with Iced Lemonade.
In behalf of the Class, the
presiding officer, thanked Miss
Louise Skelton and Mrs. Nixon
for their gracious hospitality.
