Talmadge Hits
High Court for
Prayer Ruling
ATLANTA, (GPS)—Of all
the criticism being heaped up
on the U. S. Supreme Court
for its recent ruling against
daily prayers in public schools
—and there’s plenty of it be
ing heard all across the nation
—none perhaps is more severe
nor better documented than that
voiced by Georgia’s Sen. Her
man E. Talmadge.
Talmadge, a member of the
Hampton Baptist Church, de
nounced the court’s latest con
troversial decision from the
Senate floor immediately after
is was handed down. He de
livered his strongest criticism
of the high court since the
1954 “Black Monday’’ school
desegregation decision, when,
as Governor of Georgia, he de
nounced the court in a press
conference held on the lawn
of the Governor’s Mansion in
Atlanta.
“For some years now,” he
declared in the Senate, “the
members of the Supreme Court
have persisted in reading alien
meanings into the Constitution
of the United States. Through
interpretations which cannot
be sustained by either the
language of the Constitution

Harvesting Soybeans
Harvesting is a most impor
tant step in the production of
soybeans.
You should combine soon af
ter ripening. This practice will
avoid shattering. Before har
vesting make sure the beans
and vines are thoroughly dry.
The stored beans that you
are to sell for seed should be
dried on the farm to 12 per
cent moisture or less, and then
recleaning may be necessary.
Don't forget, too, that soy
beans are good for fall grazing
between summer and winter
pastures. They may be grazed
from the early bloom stage
through the maturity stage,
and even after maturity.
Poultry Infections
After leaving the body of
an affected bird, an infection
may be passed on to suscepti
ble birds in a number of ways.
These ways are water, soil,
air, contact, carriers, vectors,
movement of birds, and me
chanical means.
The soil usually harbors ba
cteria and parasite eggs. Since
poultry constantly pick up par-
used in virtually every phase
of American public life, Sen.
Talmadge declared:
“I submit that the Supreme
Court . . , violated every
tenet of American law and
every principle of the spiritu
ality of man. It has dealt a
blow to the faith of every be
liever in a Supreme Being and
it has given aid and comfort
to the disciples of atheism by
whatever name they may call
themselves.”
He said it was his “earnest
hope . . . that this unconscion
able edict will prove to be the
event which arouses the Amer
ican people to demand action
by their elected representatives
to put an end once and for all
to the ever-broadening judicial
encroachments which are de
stroying freedom and constitu
tional government in this coun
try.
“The psalmist of old declared
that ‘Blessed is the nation
whose God is the Lord.’ The
junior senator from Georgia
believes with all his heart, Mr.
President, that the overwhelm
ing majority of the American
people will agree that the Man
of God was a greater authority
on the subject than are six po
litically-motivated members of
the Supreme Court of the
United States.”

Forestry Loans
Loans for forestry purposes
are made available under the
provisions of the Consolidated
Farms Home Administration
Act of 1961.
These loans are scheduled
for repayment within a period
consistent with the borrower's
ability to repay, taking into
account his income for forestry
products and any other income
he may have.
The maximum time may not
exceed 40 years, however loans
for equipment and operating
expenses must be paid back
by seven years.
For more information on
these forestry loans contact the
local Farmers Home Admini
stration office or my office.
Proper Storage of Seed
You know that seed must be
stored under good conditions
if high quality is to be main
tained for any length of time.
What are some items that
are important to consider in
the bins and warehouses’
The bin or warehouse should
protect the seed from insects,
moisture, rodents, and outside
weather. It should also be safe
and convenient for moving, in
specting, and servicing the
seed.
No matter how clean or dry
the seed is when it is stored,
if the bin or warehouse is poor
ly designed or built and does
not protect the seed, the seed
will be lost.
Selecting a Chemical
There are several factors to
consider in selecting a chemi
cal disinfectant. Today, let’s
mention only a few.
The power of a disinfectant
to penetrate minute masses of
matter in order to come into
contact with the micro-orga
nisms is very important. This
is referred to as the penetra
tion power of a chemical dis
infectant.
The efficiency in the pres
ence of organic matter is im
portant. In general this pres
ence greatly reduces the ac
tion of disinfectants, although
not all to the same degree. Dis
infectants that are readily af
fected by organic matter are
useless except on relatively
clean surfaces and liquids.
These are just two impor
tant items to consider in select
ing a chemical disinfectant.
Seed Supply Good
For New Barley,
Other Small Grains
A fair to good supply of cer
tified small grain seed is avail
able in Georgia for fall plant
ing, Extension Seed Market
ing Specialist Harvey Lowery
of the University of Georgia
College of Agriculture report
ed this week.
For the first time an adequate
supply of seed for the new Ga-
Jet barley will be on the mar
ket, he said.
Ga-Jet is the new barley de
veloped by Dr. A. R. Brown,
agronomist of the College Ex
periment Station, Athens. It
was released last year, but the
supply of seed then was limited.
This is the first barley va
riety developed in Georgia that
is resistant to loose smut. It is
a short, stiff-strawed, early,
six-rowed, awnless variety. Lt is
near or above the top in yield
and disease resistance, Mr.
Lowery said.
Georgia 1123 is still the out
standing variety of wheat for
Georgia, the seed specialist
pointed out. It has out-yielded
all other varieties for the last
three years. A good supply of
high quality seed for this wheat
is available.
From a pamphlet at Alco
holism Information Center: “In
our kind of world, it’s just as
important to tell our children
the truth about the grape and
the grain as it is to brief them
on the birds and bees. The
‘Cautious Carries’, who make
a mystery of alcohol and clam
up when questions are asked
about drinking, are as much I
the enemies of our children’s
health as were the ‘Nice Nel
lies’ who made sex a dirty
word.”
