Overbreathing is sometimes a
symptom of serious disease of
the heart or lungs but usually
it is regarded as a cause of
symptoms rather than a symp
tom itself.
If a person with normal lungs
and a normal heart breathes
too fast, his body loses too
much carbon dioxide. The body
uses carbon dioxide to form
carbonic acid in the blood and
body tissues. A certain amount

is necessary for propet func

A person often overbreathes
when he is excited or tense.
This happens because the body’s
‘•thermostat’’ for breathing be
comes excited and causes him
to feel short of breath when he
doesn’t really need more air at
all. He feels uncomfortable —
as if he is smothering and
needs to take a deep breath
but can’t. He overbreathes in
an effort to get over this feel
ing.
In so doing he depletes the
body’s supply of carbon diox

delicate acid-alkali balance off,

lightheadedness, tingling of
the hands, feet and mouth,
drawing sensations in the mus

sharp pains around the chest.
A person feels as if he’s hav

These symptoms disappear

turned. The body isn't harmed
but the patient has suffered a
good case of fright. When he’s
in the throes of overbrenthing,
his fright increases hi* tension
and causes him to overbreathe
even more. In treating the pa
tient, the physician strives to
restore the patient's confidence
that he is healthy and that his
symptoms have been brought
on by overbreathing rather
than by disease.
Tn that overbreathing can be
a sign of emotional stress, it is
often a symptom. But usually
it is the symptom* brought on
by overbreathing rather than
overbreathing itself which
causes the patient to seek help.
DOC MAG SAYS:

may be a sign that you’re over
breathing. Other symptoms of
this are dizziness and the feel

medically known as hyperven

breathing and shortness of
breath shouldn’t be overlook
