Study Shows
Outboards Do
Not Disturb Fish
Outboards do not disturb fish,
say Michigan scientists.
What may be the definitive
answer to the age-old problem
of whether or not fish are bo
thei’ed by outboard motors is
given in a study by the Depart
ment of Zoology of the Univer
sity of Michigan in cooperation
with the Institute for Fisheries
Research of the Michigan De
partment of Conservation.
They found that fish were
not bothered at all by nearby
operation of outboard motors,
the same conclusion the Mer
cury outboard motor manufac
turers drew from their under
water studies at Florida’s Sil
ver Springs.
In the Mercury tests. SCUBA
divers went underwater into
the fish - filled waters of Sil
ver Springs, then observed as
outboards were driven over the
fish at varying speeds.
"We found,” diver Bud Boy
ette reported, “that during the
tests, fish would frequently
swim towards the wake, as if
attracted by the bubbles of air
suspended in th* water.”
"It attracted them, rather
than repelled.”
The Michigan scientists found
essentially the same. They say:
“One is led to the conclusion
that motor use had no signifi
cant gross effects directly on
fish.”
The study, “Outboard Motora
in Relation to Fish Behavior,
Fish Production, and Angling
1 Success," describes a summer
of experimentation on t h e ef
fects of outboard motors use on
such subjects as bluegill and
largemouth black bass produc
tion in experimental ponds; lo
cation of nests by fishes; guard
ing behavior of male fish; mor
tality of eggs and sac fry; sur
vival of advanced fry; and
angling success in a natural
lake.
In each phase of the study
two lakes were set up — one
for the test and one for the
control. In the test lakes out
board motors were run exten
sively; in the control lakes no
motors were run at all.
The most significant test to
fishermen was whether or not
an Outboard motor driven cloae
to where men were casting
would bother their fishing. The
result* showed no significant
difference between the catch on

motor - days compared witit
that bn non-motor days.
“At the conclusion of t h •
study the concensus was that
no differences in angling re
sults were observed between
motor and non-motor days.
“Each of the fishermen re
ported instances of fish biting
vigorously and continually dur
ing the time the motorboat was
run past them. In three instan
ces fish were hooked in t h a
wake of the motorboat whi’.a
the boat was still within 50 feet
of the fisherman."
The biologists came up with)
other answers of interest to
fishermen and boaters. For in
stance, does propeller turbu
lence bother fish? The reply:
“Turbulence from propeller
action was not observed to hava
any gross effects dirtctly on
fish."
Does motor us* “muddy th*
water” — that is, increase tur
bidity?
“Although silt and a little
marl were present in the paths
of all motors used, turbidity
was not measurably increased
by the motors.”
Docs motor oil cause pollu
tion?
"No Oil could be found, there
fore its effects oould not ba
studied. It did not appear on
marginal or aquatic vegetation,
on the many clear pine test
strips set in the water near the
shore, or on the concrete struc
tures for control of the pond
levels," says the report.
“If no oil pollution could be
discerned in these small exper
imental ponds, it is probable
that this is almost never an
item of concern from ordinary
outboard use in natural wa
ters.”
How do motors affect fish
supply?
In comparing the numbers of
young bluegills recovered from
the two ponds at the close of
the experiment, one is led to
the conclusion that motor use
had no significant effect on
production.”
In another test two ponds
were stocked with bass. In one
a motor was run twice daily in
much the same manner as the
bluegill pond. Hie second pond
was kept as a control. A total
of 228 hours of motor use was
logged in the first pool, accu
mulated at the rate of about
three hours per day.
The results; “No appreciable
difference in production.”
Dots outboard use affect the
location of nests by fish? Tests
with sunfish and bass showed
they are not barrod by ordin
ary motorboat use from locat
ing their nesta in any parts of
natural waters except in “ex
tremely rare” instances. In the
bluegill testa, “None deserted
their nests for more than 60
seconds when an outboard boat
traveled directly over them u»
3-1/2 feet of water.”
