"Biq Gully Gang" Reunion Was
Big Event Again This Year
PORTERDALE — Mr. and
Mrs. James Adams were gen
ial hosts to the Third Annual
Reunion of the Big Gully Gang
and their families st their
friendly lakeside home at Jack
son Lake on Sunday, July 29,
1962.
Bald heads, store-bought
dentures, gray locks, and ach
ing joints were silent remind
ers that many a year had elaps
ed since a certain group of
young people living on Oak,
Pine, and Poplar Streets romp
ed in the “big gully’’ nearby
and attended the Poterdale
School. However, the presence
and enthusiasm of Miss Ethel
Belcher, their principal, and
Clara Mae Hays, one of their
favorite teachers, counteracted
any waves of nostalgia as they
shared experiences and were
grateful for the blessings
which the years had brought
to all of them.
Even on Saturday, guests be
gan arriving to relive and re
late the happy childhood me
mories.
At the noon hour on Sunday,
a most enjoyable and delicious
meal with a variety of meats,
vegetables, and sweets in abun
dance was served buffet style.
"Miss Ethel” returned thanks.
Miss Hays spoke inspiringly
and led in reciting the Twenty
third Psalm, a favorite of today
as of the chapel services
“then’’.
Hilarious entertainm* nt was
highlighted by a gubernatorial I
campaign with the following,
candidates and their managers:
(1) Pete Casteel, Mgr., Gor

“FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD”
Man, by nature, is afraid of
God. When Adam first sinned,
he should have gone immedi
ately to God to beg forgive
ness and plead for mercy. In
stead he did just what millions
are doing today: he ran and
hid from God so that God had
to come and look for him, as
it were, calling: “Adam, where
art thou?” (Gen. 3:9).
Many people who consider
themselves as good, morally,
as those about them, or better,
nevertheless feel utterly out of
place in a place of worship,
where believers pray and praise
God together. This is because
in their heart of hearts they
know that they have “sinned
and come short of the glory
of God” (Rom. 3:23).
Such, however, may come to
know, love and enjoy God
through faith in Christ. He was
Himself “God manifest in the
flesh,” come to earth in love
to pay for our sins on Calvary’s
