Mt. Pleasant Homecoming Was Happy Occasion

"Coming back again to take up something that we left
years ago,” was the wey Rev. Newton Scott described the
Mt. Pleasant Methodist Homecoming Day in his sermon
Sunday morning. Rev. Scott had returned to his former
church to bring the Homecoming message.

the home of her sister, Mrs.
Fred Williams on Sunday, Au
gust sth.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, August 7th at 2:00
p. m. at the Newborn Metho
dist Church with Rev. William
S. Berry officiating.
Surviving are one brother,
Joe Pitts, Opelika, Alabama;
sisters, Miss Mellie Pitts, Mrs.
Fred Williams, both of New
born; Mrs. Alice Gay, Mrs.
Minnie Eubanks, both of Atlan
t and several nieces and nep
hews.
Interment was in West View
Cemetery with Caldwall and
Cowan Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements. Pallbearers
included, Dewitt Loyd. Guy
Jones, Doyle Smith, Marion
Sams, Gay Benton and Frank
Hollingsworth.
The NEWS joins the many
friends of the family in extend
ing sympathy to them in their
sorrow.

family enjoyed a real Home
coming as they worshiped and
visited with their old friends
on the church grounds that are
so dear to their hearts.
Taking his scripture reading
from Revelations 1:5 and 22.5,
Rev. Scott preached on “begin
ning again” no matter where a
person might be in life. He
■ spoke about the heartaches and
1 tragedie that come in the
। lives of all people and gave
i biblical references concerning
. the shattered dreams of Adam
। and Eve and Noah and his fam

"The Bible is full of stones
about men and women who had
to pick their lives up out of
the ruins and start again,” Rev.
Scott said. He pointed out that
a new start was always hard,
but with God’s help a sincere
person can begin again on the
road of a new life.
“Be willing to forgive your
self,” Rev. Scott told the con
gregation, “for God has already
: forgiven you. He gave his only
Son in order to save his way
■ ward children from their sins.”
After the morning service ap

friends gathered around the
picnic tables in the church yard
■ where basket lunches had been

Sunday, August 19. The morn
ing message will be brought

Homecoming Sun.
Almon Baptist Church will
have homecoming Sunday, Au
gust 12, and revival services
will begin the following week
with services in the mornings
at 10:30 and evening services
will begin at 7:30 p. m.

Drilling at Waters
Bridge During Aug.
The State Highway Depart
ment will be drilling during
the month of August at Waters
Bridge over the Alcovy River.

James N. Dobbs has been
named Committeeman for New
ton County in the “Sanders For
Governor Campaign.’’ Local
headquarters for Senator San
ders campaign will be at 107
Clark Street, next door to Peo
ple Drug Store and will be
formally opened Saturday, Au
gust 11.
Mr. Dobbs has been promi
nent in civic, church and school
activities for several years. He
is a native Newton Countian
and is a resident of the Almon
community.
Having served as a past Zone
Chairman For District 18-F of
Lions International, Mr. Dobbs
is also a past president of t h e
Covington Lions Club. In 1957
he was named “Citizen Os
Year” in the Atlanta Ford
Plant, where he is employed.
Mr. Dobbs is presently serv
ing as president of the Living
ston P-TA. He is also a member
of the Official Board of the
Almon Methodist Church, and
is chairman of the finance com
mittee.
He has taken an active part
in the work of the Almon Men’s
Club and is now the program
chairman for that civic organ
ization. In Boy Scout work, Mr.
Dobbs is serving as a com
missioner in the Newton-Rock
dale District of the Atlanta
Area Council.

Father Died In
Haleyville, Ala.
Funeral services for Abner
Davis Gordon, 73, were held
Friday, August 3, at the Church
of Christ m Haleyville. Ala
bama. Brother Wayne Mitchell,
minister of the Hackleburg
Church of Christ and Rev. J.
W. Hughes, pastor of the Hack
leburg Baptist Church, offi
ciated. Burial was in the Hill
crest Cemetery, Haleyville. Mr.
Gordon died on Wednesday,
August 1, after a lingering ill
ness.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Evie Gordon, one son, Wallace
Gordon, Livingston, Alabarri;
four daughters, Miss Christ ne
Gordon, Hackleburg; Mrs. Le
roy Durden, Covington; M s.
A. J. Parker, Watkinsville;
Mrs. Frank Colquitt, Birming
