There's a pleasure in watch
ing a man who wields with
expert skill a casting rod and
reel.
It’s poetry in action, when
done right and brings a thrill
to the heart of any true angler
who has spent the time re
quired to learn bait casting.
Perhaps it’s because the
casting reel is one of the first
mechanical fishing devices to
come down the pike, perhaps
it’s because casting is one of
the most difficult systems of
fish-catching for the inexperi
enced, and perhaps it’s because
of the super-accuracy possible
with casting equipment, better ;

I Casting is not really diffi
cult, the fishing authorities at
Mercury outboards claim, it’s
just that it takes a bit of prac
tice before it can be effectively
mastered.
The secret is in an educated
thumb. The thumb acts as a
lock before the lure is cast,
locking the reel and prevent
ing the lure from flying off
until the time is ripe. After the
lure is loosed the thumb acts
as a brake, keeping the reel
from overrunning and back
lashing the line.
When the lure has reached
its intended target the thumb
feathers the reel to a halt and

allows the lure to drop lightly
on the water. And after a fish
strikes an educated thumb acts
as a drag on the reel, prevent

the fish.
It is this latter service that
appeals to the dedicated cast

'reels that automatically apply
the drag for him; all spinning
reels have this feature.
But the man with a deep
seated love of casting reels ab
hors this and prefers to do hu
own “thumbing.”
