THIS AND THAT!
Jack Tighe, manager of the Louisville Colonels, champions
of the American Association playoffs, says that the most
important thing a manager has to do is “keep harmony among
his players, especially those not playing.” . . . Newton Rams’
season slate is now at the .500 mark — 2 wins, 2 losses and
one tie.
Jerry Bouchillon, co-captain of the 1961 Ram football
team, now a student at the University of Georgia, has been
pledged to the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity ... Yankee
Manager Ralph Houk says that Mickey Mantle is the great
est baseball player alive today. That means Houk rates
Mickey over Willie Mays, Stan Musial, Ted Williams and
Joe DiMaggio .. .. Coach Milton McLaney has not re
yoried any injuries to his Ram players and so we assume
tiat all are in good shape now that Dennis Hammonds has
returned to the lineup.
A footoall and 8 shirts manufactured in Covington were
among the door prizes at the Georgia Kiwanis District Con
vention at Jekyll Island this past week. Oxford Mfg. Com
pany and Brunswick Sports donated the prizes for the con
vention . . . It seems as if those pre-season football prognos
ticators have missed terribly on the Auburn Tigers. Thus
far, the Tigers have won two big games — 22-21 over Ten
nessee and 16-6 over Kentucky at Lexington. ‘
ATLANTA COPS COMEBACK HONORS 3
(Reprinted From The Sporting News) ;
One of the tremendous comeback stories in modern times
has been that of the Atlanta club of the International League
which won the Junior World Series.
It is amazing because Atlanta didn’t make one comeback,
it made four.
Late in the regular season, the team was seemingly doom
ed to the second division, but it caught fire and clinched
a playoff berth on the next-to-last day of the season. In the
first-round playoff, Atlanta lost the first two games to Tor-‘
onto, then came on to win. This procedure was repeated in |
the final series with Jacksonville. |
Trailing Louisville three games to two, Atlanta won a
doubleheader from the Colonels to capture the Junior World’s
Series. Atlanta writers dubbed the team “the club that
wouldn't quit.” Manager Joe Schultz and his players rate
hearty congratulations. :
