" FDR'S LITTLE WHITE HOUSE
' To walk into the Little White House at Warm Springs takes yuu
I back seventeen years in time,
On April 12, 1945, Franklin D. Roosevelt was posing for a water
teolor portrait. He had just advised the artist that he would have to
{leave in a few minutes. Then, unexpectedly, he stumped over the table
fbefore him, fatally stricken by a cerebral hemorrhage. Since that April
day, nearly everything in the Litte White House has remained much
|as it was the day Roosevelt died.
The Little White House was completed by Roosevelt in the spring
tof 1982, At this time he was still governor of New York, but had been
{eoming to Warm Springs since 1924, using the waters to aid in his re
\eovery from polio.
The cottage is small, with three bedrooms, kitchen, entrance and
jeombination living-dining room, Furnishings are simple, but tastefu!.
'Everywhere one is reminded of the President’s personality. In his bed-
Iroom is a desk presented by CWA workers in 1984; naval pictures and
'ship models are reminiseent of FDR's great love of the sea—he was once
' Assistant Secretary of the Navy; and the chain of his beloved dog Fala
still hangs in a eloset.
In the garage sits the 1938 Ford convertible which Rooseveit drove
Iby means of specially fitted hand controls, On the car is a courtesy
| Georgia license tag issued to him by the State reading “FDR-1" and
| dated 1945.
[ An apartment above the garage was oeeupied by Roosevelt's cook,
| maid and valet. Across from this i a guest house and nearby is the
| Roosevelt Museum.
i The museum houses an extensive eollection of Roosevelt mementos,
)Most of the things displayed were given to him. Several unusual por
jtraits of Roosevelt, an assortment of canes he owned, photographe,.
| personal effects and a naval emsign flag flown by ships earrying the
| President may be seen.
| Soon the Little White House will get a “face lifting”. T'win lakes, con
inected by a waterfall, and additional walks and pathways are planned
{to further beautify the grounds. In the museum an auditorium will be
tbuilt. Here motion pictures of Roosevelt and his life at the Little White
| House and Warm Springs will be shown,
The Little White House is located off Georgia Highway 8§ near
‘Warm Springs and is open every day during the year.
