thought this would be put on
the ballot of a Christian Coun
ty-
God blessed our City of Cov
ington, and our County, It has
been one of the States finest
and most prosperous towns
and counties. He tells us, in
the Bible what he does to a
town, or nation that takes
things in their own hands and
forgets His teachings. Warn
ings come through your pulpit,
from God's called ministers, as
to what will happen to us if
we do not obey His laws. If
you have been to Sunday
School during these past
months you have seen what
happened to the people of Jeru
salem, where God's chosen
people lived. They were warn
ed by Jeremiah (for God spoke
to him and told him what to
tell the people) that they
would even be banished from
their homes and taken, in cap
tivity, to Babylon where they
would remain for seventy
years. They ' laughed at this
Prophet of God! Are we to
laugh at. the messages that come
from our ministers today and
bring to our young people, and
all the people of our county
alcoholic drinks. They are not
bad you say! They can get
them in Rockdale and other
counties, we get the cans and
they get the tax you say. What
kind of money do we want?

Anti-Beer Assn.
A group of pastors and lav
men representing a large num
ber of Newton County churches
met Sunday afternoon at First
Methodist Church to organize
for the purpose of publicly op
posing the sale of beer in
Newton County.
The resulting organization,
called Christian Men’s Associ
ation of Newton County elected
Brayant Steele as president'
Rucker Ginn. Rev. Irving
Rudolph and H. V. Johnson,
v i c e-p residents; and Ben
Banks, secretary-treasurer.
Two committees were formed
to begin work immediately.

Pennington Elected

45th District Senator
Brook? Pennington, Jr. of
Madison, was elected Senator
of the new 45th Senatorial Dis
trict over C. Otis Nixon of
Covington Tuesday in a speci
al Democratic Primary. The
unofficial total vote in the five
counties was; Pennington 5,499
and Nixon 2,483.
The balloting in Putnam and
Jasper counties was very light
but in Newton County, Mor- .
gan and Walton the heavy vote I
added to Mr. Pennington's .
margin of victory.

Annual Homecoming football game for Newton County
High School will be played Friday night on Sharp Field
with the Rams meeting Hapeville. Kickoff is set for 8 o'clock.
Other than the gridiron
clash the main festivities will
center around the selection and
orowning of the 1962 Home
coming Queen. The queen will
be crowned in pre-game fes
tivities instead of at halftime
as has been the custom in the
past.

ville is one of the new teams
on the Rams’ 1962 slate and is
AA classified in the state.
NCHS enters the Homecom

week the Rams downed the
Georgia Military High School
outfit at Milledgeville 27 to
12. The only two losses of the
season have been to Morgan
County 33-0, and Chamblee
13-0. However, each of these
teams is rated in their top 10’s
of the state, with Morgan
County topping the B class.

evening at 7:30 p. m. at Hend
erson's Restaurant. This will be
their Founder’s Day program
as the first Pilot Club was

Manager Speaks
To Kiwanians
Glenn A. McCullough, Ex
ecutive Manager of the Georgia
Press Association, will be the
guest speaker at the Covington
Kiwanis Club meeting today
(Thursday) at Legion Home at
1 o’clock. Program chairman
for the day is Leo S. Mallard
and he will introduce the
speaker.
Mr. McCullough is a native
of Rome, Georgia, and attended
West Georgia College at Car
rollton, and the Walter Will
iams Journalism School at the
University of Missouri.
He has served on the staff of
the Kansas City Star, and later
was staff writer for the As
sociated Press at Charlotte.
N. C. In 1960 he was special
projects coordinator for the
American Petroleum Institute
in New York City.

The Brick Store Community
was selected as the outstanding
Blue Award Community in
Newton County on Friday, Oc
tober 12th. Pine Grove and
Starrsville Communities were
rated as Blue Award communi
ties for the year in the North
Georgia Community Develop
ment Program of Newton
County also. Heard Mixon rated
a red award and Flint Hill
scored a white award.
The Community Develop
ment Program is co-sponsored
by the Farmers Club of the At
lanta Chamber of Commerce
and the Covington Newton
County Chamber of Cm.merce.
Brick Store Community Club
will submit their record book
to the State Committee who
will study the winning record
from each county. The top
nine communities in the North
Georgia area will be selected
for visiting by an area Judg
ing Team during the second
week in November This com
mittee will select the top five
for cash awards.

Some 57,404 disabled vete
rans in Georgia will start re
ceiving their increased com
pensation checks about October

The 1963 Operational Fund Drive for the Atlanta Are*
Council, Boy Scouts of America, will get underway at a
“Kick-off Breakfast” next Tuesday morning at the Ameri
can Legion Home in Covington at 7 A. M. Approximately 50
men will be present to launch the fund drive which has as
its theme this year: “To Help A Boy Become A Boy Scout.”
This drive is getting underway
throughout the greater Atlanta
area, of which the Newton-Rock
dale District is a part.
