News Notes From
Salem

In my snooping around this
Monday morning for news, I have
gotten busy signals on most tele
phones — and those that were
not busy, the answer, “I just
don’t have any news”. So. if this
isn't an interesting column this
week you readers will understand
why.
The members of Salem Metho
dist Church would like to thank
their public for the wonderful re
sponse given their turkey supper
on Saturday night. It was indeed
a success and they are grateful
to each one who contributed in

Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Savage
visited Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Ram
sey, Monday night. On Saturday,
Miss Jerry Lowe, who is a stu
dent at Emory at Oxford, was
Mr. and Mrs. Savage and Donald
Savage's dinner guest at Salem
Club House.
Mr. and Mrs. Doug Bates
and family of Atlanta were i n
this vicinity Friday and Saturday,
due to the serious illness of Mrs.
S. J, Moss, and visited Mr. and
Mrs. W. C. Bates on Saturday
night. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Bates
Sr. left Tuesday for Sanford and
St. Petersburg, Florida, where
they will spend a few weeks with
relatives.
Morris Fears Jr. has been in
Middleton spending a few days
with his grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Tom Langston. Rev. and
i Mrs. Fears went to Middleton on
Monday to return the young man
to his home.
The Manson Miller family visit
ed relatives at McDonough, Sun
day.

our happiness in the fact that
Mrs. Tom Smith, who now makes
, her home in Porterdale, but has
I lived in Salem many years, has
recovered sufficiently to return
i from Newson County Hospital to
her home.

Donough is visiting the Burlie
Lewis Jr. and Morris Allen
families at this time.
Among weekend visitors to Sa
lem were Mrs. Belle Melton and
Miss Patricia Melton of Decatur

of Covington visited Mr. and
Mrs. Douglas Yancey on Satur
day night. On Sunday, the Yan
cey’s visited the Dr. J. E. Tay
lor Jr. family in Atlanta.
Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Aylor and
family had as their dinner guests,
Sunday the F. H. Dennis family
of Mableton.
Miss Leitha Cowan has a host
of friends that regret to learn
that she is on the sick list
this week.
Mrs. A. L. English is in Mi
ami, Florida, where she is spend
ing the winter with Mr. and Mrs.
Pitts Ingram.

Mrs. James Bowen at Mansfield
Clubhouse last Tuesday night.

Gets Assignment
At Ft. Jackson
FORT JACKSON. S. C. - Pri-
! vate Johnny H. Mitchell, son of
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Mitchell of
Route No. 1 Oxford, Ga. has been
assigned to Company D, 17 Bat-1
I talion, 4th Training Regiment at
| Fort Jackson, S. C. for specialist
I training as a light vehicle driver
His assignment to this particular
course of instruction was the re
sult of a battery of aptitude tests,
taken upon entry into the U. S
Army, which Indicated a high
potential in operation of vehicles
During the eight week course of
| instruction, he will receive train
ing in the operation and mainten
ance of military vehicles, of both
the tactical and commercial type.
Included in the course are classes
in map reading, road, cross-coun
try, night, and convoy driving.
At the first International i
Congress on Technology and
Blindness held this year in
| New York, many experimental |
aids and devices for use by:
visually handicapped people
were demonstrated. The Amer
ican Foundation for the Blind,
sponsors of the Congress, hope
fully predicts that many of
these aids will be made avail
able in the very near future.
