Burke's Views on High School Basketball
The Atlanta Constitution carried an interesting interview
by Sam Burke, Executive Secretary of the Georgia High
School Association, the controlling organization for high
ichool sports throuughout the state.
Among the more interesting facts concerning high school
basketball coming from Mr. Burke were these:
“Some 10,000 boys and girls are playing on varsity teams
throughout the state. More than 2,000,000 fans will have
seen games during the past season.
“If the majority of schools want an open tournament (all
classifications), it’s all right with me.
“I blame coaches for exciting the crowds. A coach who
jumps up and hollers at officials and puts on an act invites
trouble.
“I certainly don’t agree with critics who say there is no
Interest in girls’ basketball.
“A boy shouldn’t play one sport the entire year.
“We caution players that they may lose their chance for
a college scholarship by playing semi-pro baseball.”
THIS AND THAT!
Billy Banks, the local kegler who almost had a perfect
game recently at Holliday Lanes, rolled 10 straight strikes
before leaving the six pin in the 11th frame. He wound up
with a 279 . . . Winder’s Coach Bob Dixon designated D. G.
Osborne, Supt. of Winder-Barrow school, to receive the
team’s trophy as first place winner in Region 4AA boys
play Saturday night at South Hall . . . Gary Player says
that the reason he wears black on the golf course is that
it gives him more strength.
It is now official! Wally Butts will sever his relations with
the University of Georgia after 25 years of coaching and
athletic directing. Butts says that he has plans for private
business enterprises and “maybe coaching.” . . . This should
be of news to our NCHS girls basketball team: The champion
Dodge County girls team this year will be without two
star forwards — Linda Ryner (who graduated last June),
and Joanne Brown (who got married during the school
term) . . . And, wasn’t that neat printed program used at
Hartwell in the 4AA East tournament a thing of beauty? It
had all the teams’ rosters, coaches, numbers, team colors,
and other vital information for a tourney.

She had 22 points Friday night

Bailey and Laster went about
their chores with their fine

Bailey added the two points in
the last 15 seconds of the

the leading scorer in the sub

Day Morcock of Newton real

four of the best games in both

of 82 points in the four tilts:
that’s an average of 20.5 points
per game.

Many fans thought that the
Newton Rams were up against
almost unsurmountable odds in

And in the final summary, it
was 6-6 Center Tommy Buch

Newton Rams End Season
With A Fine 29-3 Record
Newton County Rams’ 1962-
63 season came to an end Fri
day evening at South Hall as
the local NCHS five lost a close
battle to Winder-Barrow 39-36.
Winder was the overall Region
4AA champ having beaten
Hart County Saturday night
60-52.
Coach Ronald Bradley’s team
compiled another outstanding
season with 29 victories and on
ly three defeats. This brings
Coach Bradley’s five-year re
cord at Newton High to 130
victories and only 16 defeats for
a phenomenal 89.4% mark.
The team won the Sub-Reg
ion 4AA West tournament at
Cumming Tuesday and Wed
nesday. In the Wednesday clin
cher the Rams downed Coach
D. B. Carroll’s team 53-44.
At South Hall in the semi
finals of the Region 4AA the
NCHS team ran into a fired-up,
red hot Winder-Barrow team.
Not only was Coach Dixon’s
team hot from floor, but his
boys made all nine free throws
attempted.
Winder’s Tommy Buchanan,
a 6-6 center led the scoring for
his team with 14 markers. His
offensive rebounds paved the
way for the Winder victory.
The Rams had beaten the W-B
team twice during the regular
season—by two points and four
points.

loss of the season last year was

semi-finals. This year they had

Injuries definitely played a
big part in the tourney games
in the final analysis. Jordye
Bailey favored her injured
knee, but she played great ball
anyhow. Hart County boys had
two boys injured to a certain
extent. Sherrill Whitaker and
Gary Phillips, both regulars on
Bill Ensley’s team, were hobb

definitely was not at full speed,
although he performed credi

Four Newton Girls, One Ram Player
Named to 4AA All-Tournament Team
Four Newton County girls and one Ram player were
named to the Region 4AA All-Tournament team, as selected
by a special committee who witnessed the games at South
Hall gym Friday and Saturday.
The four girls, members of the champion Newton High,
named to the twinkle team are as follows: Day Morcock,
Jordye Bailey, Carol George and Betty Faith Jaynes. The
other members of the team are: Melba Yeargin and Alexa
Carpenter of Hart County; and Brenda Hill of Elbert County.
A tie for one of the positions resulted between Jaynes and
Hill — therefore seven players were named.
Terry Smith of Newton County was the only boy to
make the team other than those from Winder-Barrow and
Hart County.
Walking off with the Outstanding Player designation in
boys’ play was Winder's fine guard, Terrell Sailors. Newton’s
Day Morcock and Hart County’s Melba Yeargin tied for
the Outstanding player honor in girls’ action.
