Mrs. Roy Wallace. You will re
member we spent months at
Emory U. Hospital, with our
husbands. Roy survived his
surgery several months longer
than Belmont . . . her first note
to me said: “Mable I thought
I knew, but I did not even be
gin to know how to sympathize
with you, NOW I do.” ....
This is the first time we had
seen each other . . . even tho
we had called each other on
the ’phone and written.
We took so long telling
everybody goodbye in Athens,
that we did not realize it was
a quarter of 12 when we went
in to see Kathleen . , . and af
ter our greetings she said “You
and Leo are going to stay for
lunch for we cooked lunch for
my son, wife and the children,
and only he came ... so we
did stay and enjoyed every
moment of it . . . especially of
knowing that precious 90 year
young Mother of Kathleens.
On home . . . where we
changed clothes in suit cases
for hospital clothes for my
shadow . . for she entered Em
ory U. Hospital for surgery
Sunday P.M. . . . We stayed
there thru Monday . . but out
of her room most of the time
for our throat was getting
pretty sore . . . and down we
come with a head cold, and
me home and my shadow in the
hospital. She “came out fine”,
so the doctor said, and he
meant it . . but she didn't look
fine to me . . pale, completely
OUT . . . and, well, you just
don’t like to see ’um look like
that. We couldn’t go back to
hospital . . and I’ve been told
not to get out of bed for I
have a lulu of a head cold.
Mary Mallard has plenty of
hometown friends near her . . .
Florence Arnold on same hall,
nearby, Mrs. Carl Rountree,
wife of past Pres, of Ga. Press,
right down hall . . . and Ogla
Morgan . . . John Bob Weaver
on another wing . . . but he was
not having company, and we.
sneezing did not go by . .
thought we’d make it today if
we were O.K.
Now comes the sad news
that Prof. Brown, of Oxford,
a beloved friend to not only us
but everybody in Newton
County, has gone away. “Fes
ser” as we all called him, had
a very special place within each
of our hearts, as has his love
ly wife. Our hearts go out to
her in loving sympathy . . .
and one great hurt is that we
cannot go to her in this hour
of her sad bereavement, to hold
her close within our arms and
let her FEEL how much we
care. Mary Mallard just called
me from her hospital room to
tell me she was fine, and to
see that I was alright and did
not have Flu. She's wanting to
come home already, and I
could not tell her about Prof.
Brown ... for she loved him
so very much. In fact, one of
my prized, and beautifully in
delible engraved pictures, in
my wonderful album of mem
ories, is the two of them perch-

ed on stumps at the Mallard’s |
farm, speaking not one word, j
but pulling in the brim and j
bass. They were both born fish- I
ermen, and had so many hap
py hours together fishing.
Dr. Brown was not only one
of the most beloved men on
the Emory Campus, but
throughout the South . . .North,
South, East and West, “Fesser”
Brown will live within the
hearts of young men, fine busi
ness men, ministers and what
have-you, that he, personally,
worked with and for. Young
people that he went to bat for
when they could not get an
education. He saw that the
funds came in from somewhere
to get these young people to
get a college education. They
will ever rise up and call him
blessed. He spent his life in
loving service for his fellow
man. He will be greatly miss
ed in this community, as well
as LaGrange College, and over
the State. Our heartfelt sym
pathy, goes to Mrs. Brown, who
has worked hand in hand with
him in all these beautiful en
deavors.
Today is a day I’d like to be
finishing a nice birthday din
ner, with a beautiful birthday
cake with 16 candles, instead
of 72 .... as was our custom
. . . yes, today, as I write it it
February 26th . . . the birth
day of our Companion who
went away just before his 71st
birthday. We do not forget
these days even if we do not
often mention them. They are
happy days to remember, and
yet we cannot dwell upon the
loneliness of today . . . just
keep living over the happy days
we have had together. God
helps as we help ourselves, and
as our beloved Dr. E. E. Lee
told me . . . “Goth hath NOT
promised sun without rain, joy
without sorrow, peace without
pain. God Hath promised
strength for the day, rest for
the laborer, light for the
way . . . .”
All you friends and loved
ones at Emory University Hos
pital . . . and in all the hos
pitals, especially Mr. Dewey
Biggers at Crawford Long . . .
we are holding each of you
close within our hearts and
prayers for a speedy recovery
. . that goes for all at Newton
Co. Hospital too ... With every
stroke of the broom, we are
saying a prayer for you, as we
do our “SWEEPIN’ UP.”

of physical education and religious
work at Porterdale.
On his retirement in 1960 a scho
larship fund for needy students
was instigated in his honor and the
E. J. Brown Scholarship Fund is
supported by former students of
Prof. Brown to defray expenses of
worthy students to enable them to
attend Emory.
As an expression of the love
and appreciation the students at
Emory-at-Oxford held for him the I
1953 yearbook (The Memory) was
dedicated to him as follows:
“Deeply etched in our memories
of Emory-at-Oxford is one who
has devoted his life to the stu
dents and to the school. His in
terest, sincerity and willing help
fulness were responsible for many
of us accepting the opportunity to
come here. In his years as athle
tic director, he instilled within un
told numbers of students an eag
erness for good sportsmanship and
clean living. His Sunday School
lessons which are personified in
his life, have been a constant in-I

life, which can never be measured :
