Buying a Dishwasher?
By Doris Oglesby
Extension Home Improvement
Specialist
If you are among the fortun
ate ones who are planning to
buy a dishwasher you are luc
ky. Lucky to be looking for
ward to owning such a time
saving appliance and lucky be
cause there is so much from
which to choose.
Regardless of which brand
vou prefer, or finally buy,
here are some things which
ou should check as you shop.
Capacity is of great import
nce. The more it holds, the
•ss often you wash dishes. The
ype of capacity is just as im
portant as the fact that capa
ity is large. In other words,
here should be room for the
rings which you will want to
vash. It is most disconcerting
o find that baking sheets,
killets and the like will not go
n. There should also be plenty
of room for silver, cups and
-.aucers and glasses.
A good dishwasher is of solid
teel construction throughout,
rhe interior should be either
oorcelain or vinyl bonded to
teel. Both finishes are durable,
“he vinyl also cushions the
ishes. Racks should be vinyl
•oated. A thick coat gives
“bounce.”
It should be easy to
oad and you shouldn’t
lave to remove anything,
xcept perhaps the sil
er basket, to load either rack.
7hether it loads from the front
>r top is a matter of personal
preference. If it opens from the
ront, check the racks to see if
hey roll freely and easily. If
possible, check with them
oaded.
There should be a good doo.
seal and a water level safety
witch to prevent overflowing.
Zheck the length of cycle and
he amount of water used. Cyc
les range from about 35-50
minutes and the average am
ount of water used from 10 to
13 gallons. This is hot water
and probably will not be more
than you use when washing
dishes by hand. You may raise
an eyebrow at such a state
ment but remember that you
will run the dishwasher only
once or perhaps twice a day
and sometimes even less often.
Good washing action is im
portant. Ask to be shown hov'
it works. Water should reach
every part of the tub. There is

no “best" way to get it there.
You should not have to rinse
the dishes beforehand. Check
the instruction book to see
what dish preparation is ne
cessary.
The control should be flex
ible and easy to reach. The de
tergent dispenser should also
be easy to reach and to fill.
A heating unit in the bottom
insures hot water and good
drying. Also check in the bot
tom to see if there is a strainer.
There may not be one but if
there is it should be easy to
reach and to clean.
Some features are mighty
nice to have but cannot be
considered as absolutely neces
sary. They include a choice of
front panels, allowing you to
mix or match with surrounding
cabinets and appliances. Some
manufacters offer a wood
chopping block top. A rinse
dispenser may be handy where
water is hard. It prevents
water spotting. Some manufac
turers offer a dishwasher of
extra-large capacity for big
families or where frequent en
tertaining is the rule.
Another decision you may
have to make is whether to buy
a portable or built-in dishwas
her. There are advantages to
each. If you want to know more
about them, ask your Home
Demonstration Agent for a
copy of "So You’re Going to
Buy a New Dishwasher.”
