Newton County Girls In State Tournament Tonight
BLAB SLAB
THIS AND THAT!
Georgia Tech’s season record was an impresive 21-5 and
earned for Coach Whack Hyder the “Coach of The Year”
citation in the SEC . . . For those interested in Coach Coop
er's record at Newton High for the 8 years he has been
girls cage coach, his teams have won 187 games and lost
34 . . . The Masters Golf Tournament at Augusta will limit
the attendance on the two final days (Saturday and Sunday,
April 6-7). This marks the first time that attendance will
have been restricted at a major golf event . . . Tickets are
still on sale for the Newton Tipoff “Fans Appreciation Ban
quet,” Thursday, March 14, according to Rr. Maurice Griffin,
president of the club.
As to open classification basketball in Georgia high
school, I’m for keeping the system as it is now. More teams
and more players enjoy it just the way it is today. . . Murray
County, the AA State winner last year, found the going
rough in A competition last week. The Murray team lost to
Blackshear 59 - 49 in the State meet at Macon. . . Hunters of
bear, deer, boar and turkey will have a chance to try their
skill in Rabun County in about four years. A management
area will be open then.
The name of John Lance was in the news last week in
two sections of the country. Rev. Lance of Porterdale is tak
ing a new pastoral assignment at Sylvester, and Coach Lance
at Pittsburg (Kansas) State College concluded his 41st sea
son as cage coach with a record of 643 victories. Porterdale’s
John Lance was one of the most avid sports fans we have
known here in Newton County. He really knows his sports,
too!
Tom Lovem, the Mansfield Junior high coach, whose
girls team won two games in the recent Newton County ele
mentary tourney, (the same number of victories in the
tourney as Porterdale hung up) didn’t win the title. Here’s
how it happened: Mansfield had to play Palmer-Stone for
the fourth spot in the tourney. They downed Palmer-Stone
and then on Saturday night won a 29-28 thriller over Fic
quett for the third place trophy.
We noticed that Ala. Coach Bear Bryant was in Atlanta
last weekend for an NCAA meeting. And we noticed also
that the Journal’s Furman Bisher didn’t interview Coach
Bryant!. . . . Newton’s junior high tourney was held at the
NCHS gym for the first time in many years. The crowds
were large and a very fine tournament was staged. . . Harold
Callaway, tall center of Coach L. G. Carney's Ficquett team,
will definitely help the high school Rams next season. He's
the first big boy with an excellent jump shot, to come along
to NCHS in many years . .
There’s no rest for the athlete (the three-sport athlete
that is) at New’ton High. Tim Christian, Jeff Hinton and Jim
my Wiley are presently engaged in spring football practice.
They just completed a basketball season and last fall play
ed the grid sport. When the spring football session is over
later this month, they’ll take to the baseball diamond. Terry
Rutledge, a senior, has followed this procedure for the past
several years.
Rufus Harris of Mercer University tells this one on a coach
who died and went down below. He told everyone down
there that he owned the place. “Yes, I own the place. My
alumni gave it to me when I was on earth.”

Ficquett Boys,
Porterdale Girls
County Champs
The Porterdale girls and
and Ficquett boys are the 1963
champions of Newton County
junior high basketball. The
charges of Coach Billy Crowell
downed Livingston Saturday
evening at the NCHS gym 32-
27, and the boys of Coach L.
G. Carney turned back Palmer-
Stone boys 38-33.
Leading the way for the ti
tle in the boys play was Cen
ter Harold Callaway, who
scored 21 points in the cham
pionship game. Fay Carter of
the Livingston sextet, led the
scoring in the girls clash with
18 markers.
Palmer-Stone came from be
hind a six-point deficit at half
time to go ahead of the Fic
quett five late in the third pe
riod 24-22. However, late in
the fourth quarter Callaway,
Hooper and Walden started
hitting and built-up the vic
tory margin.
Porterdale’s scoring was
evenly divided between the
three starting forwards—Floyd,
Jeffries and Allen. Floyd had
12 and the other two had 10
points each. Gail Allen added
the four points in the final pe
riod that put her team in the
lead to stay.
For third place in the tour
nament the Livingston boys
downed the Porterdale team
32-28, and the Mansfield girls
defeated the Ficquett squad in
a thriller 29-28.

Carries 31-0 Record Against
College Park Quintet 7:45
BY 808 GREER
(News Sports Editor)
Today is The Day: Newton County's girls are faced with
sudden elimination from the State AA tournament or an ex
tension to Number 32 on their winning streak this year.
Tonight at 7:45 at the Alex
ander Memorial Coliseum in
Atlanta Coach Stone Cooper’s
charges will take the floor
against College Park in a first
round game of the State meet.
Already champions of Region
4AA, the NCHS sextet will send
an all-senior team into the fray.
Coach Cooper has stuck to
his starters most of the year
which includes Jordye Bailey,
Rosemary Laster and Day Mor
cock at forwards, and Carol
George. Sandra Lester and
Betty Faith Jaynes at guards.
The NCHS team finished
fourth in the State AA tourna
ment last year at Fitzgerald.
In their initial game of the
Fitzgerald meet the NCHS girls
downed Ringgold 45-44. In the
second game they defeated
Henry County 54-35. Newton
lost to Dodge County 46-22 in
the semis and then lost the
consolation game to Hart Co
unty 48-43.
Newton is bracketed this
year with Calhoun, the Num
ber One team of Region 3AA,
and Coffee County, the Num
ber Two team in lAA.
Semi-finals in the Atlanta
meet will be held on Friday
(Tomorrow) at 5 p. m. and
7:40 p. m. Boys action in the
semis will be held at 6:20 and
9 p. m. Friday.

forte of Laster.
