Those Personal
Exemptions Are
Very Important
Every taxpayer is entitled
to at least one personal exemp
tion of S6OO in filing his Fed
eral income tax return for
1962, Mr. A. C. Ross, District
Director of Internal Revenue
for the Atlanta District, said to
day.
A taxpayer who has reach
ed his 65th birthday on or be
fore Janaury 1, 1963, or who
was blind at the end of 1962 is
entitled to an extra S6OO ex
emption, and if both condi
tions existed, he gets two ex
tra exemptions of S6OO each.
The taxpayer’s wife is also
entitled to these additional ex
emptions for age and blindness.
Mr. Ross said a taxpayer who
files a separate return may
claim his wife’s personal ex
emption and additional ex
emptions only if she had no
income and was not the de
pendent of another taxpayer.
If your husband or wife died
during 1962, Mr. Ross said the
number of his or her exemp
tions is determined as erf the
date of death. Be sure to check
the appropriate blocks on your
return.
Taxpayers, who have any
questions on exemptions may
get Document No. 5013, “Per
sonal Exemptions and Depen
dents,” by writing to their lo
cal Internal Revenue Office.
Recent surveys show that for
every S2O spent for food in the
United States, 1150 to 12 00 of
this amount goes for packaging,
according to Dr. Mary Gibbs, Ex
tension consumer marketing
specialist.

INCOME SECURITY
FOR OLD AGE
An assured monthly income
of $254.00 is possible under the
Social Security Program and
most everyone is eligible for
credit under the program, in
cluding farmers.
The $254.00 is the maximum
family benefit payable under
the Social Security Program.
While you may not be able to
reach maximum benefit eligi
bility, most individuals can
qualify for some assured in
come in the face at adversity.
Perhaps you know someone
who gets a social security old
age check, a widow and chil
dren who receive monthly ben
efits or maybe someone who
gets a monthly check because
he is disabled to work. These
people have one thing in com
mon; they had social security
credit for their earnings. To
get the credit, their earnings
bad to be reported.
A farmer who had a net
profit of as much as S4OO in
1962 can get credit for the
year. More important to the
small farmer, he can usually
get credit for the year if he
had S6OO farm income but
didn’t clear S4OO.
Social security credit is ob
tained by reporting earnings.
Two forms are needed. One is
called Form 1040 and the other
Schedule F. They are federal
income tax forms but are used
to report earnings for social
security. They are used for so
cial security even though the
individual may not owe any
income tax.
Form 1040 is a general form
used by city and farm people
alike. The other form, Sche
dule F, is used especially for
farmers. This form looks hard
to fill out but it’s only a list
of what you sold and spent in
the farming operation for 1962.
Self-employed people, in
cluding farmers, are eligible
for social security benefits
But, the benefits come only if
income has been reported and
social security credit establish
ed.
All persons should establish
social security credit if they
are eligible. It could prove to
be a very valuable investment.
Regular monthly income is
very important to a person
when he is 65 or over or dis
abled to work. This is a mat
ter of great importance to the
entire family. Find out how
social security may affect you
and your family. Report earn
ings where social security
credit can be established.
PLANNING THE FAMILY
FOOD PRESERVATION
PROGRAM
The average American fam
ily of four spent $30.50 a week
for food in 1962.
If you were one of those fam
ilies who had a well-planned
family food preservation pro
gram in 1962, I’m sure you did
not spend this much. The
fruits and vegetables you pro
cessed last summer were prob
ably a great help. They make
meal planning, preparation and
serving a real joy. Now, with
spring approaching, we are
ready to make plans for re
stocking the food freezer and
the pantry.
First, let’s plan the year’s

family food supply. Whether
this food will be bought or
produced at home, don’t put
economy before an adequate
diet. One's health is influenced
more by the food he eats than
any other factor.
Now, consider which of these
foods can be produced at home.
Even with a small plot of
ground, many vegetables and
small fruits can be produced
at home. We have a leaflet
“Planning Your Family Food
Supply” which lists the points
to consider in producing food
at home. If you plan to have
a home garden, be sure to buy
seeds of recommended varie
ties for processing. Then, make
several plantings, so all vegeta
bles will not be ready to pro
cess at the same time.
How much food should you
process for your family? To
make this decision easy, pre
pare a family food preserva
tion guide. Decide which foods
will be canned, frozen, dried,
cured or brined.
Perhaps you may find it best
to buy fresh produce When it
is in season. Plan ahead where
you can secure these products.
Make every effort to get only
quali t y products, properly
harvested.
In processing fruits use only
tree or vine-ripened fruit.
Harvest them when fully de
veloped but before the fruit
becomes soft. Hold in the home
to ripen and mellow further.
Having fruit at the right stage
of maturity is one of the most
important processing steps.
For the meat supply, you
may produce this at home or
buy it in quantity. Remember
to process only quality meats.
Plan to freeze meats several
times during the year so you
may use the freezer space to
a greater advantage.
Os course, you want to use
part of the freeze^ space for
ready -to - serve dishes. This
really saves you time in meal
preparation!
A great deal is being said
today about storing food in a
fallout shelter. Plan to store a
two weeks food supply in your
home. This should be a part of
your planned home food pre
servation program. Plans
should be made to replace this
periodically so that the food is
in excellent condition at all
tames.
I will be happy to furnish
you further information on
planning the 1963 home food
preservation program.
This Week’s Tip
An important factor in mak
ing good coffee is keeping the
coffeemaker clean. The coffee
maker should ba cleaned each
time it is used. When stains
accumulate, a little special at
tention is needed.
If you have an aluminum
coffeemaker, use a non-scratchy
household cleaner or soap-fill
ed, steel-wool pad to remove
stains. The use of soda, deter
gent or coffee stain removers
may cause the aluminum to pit
or darken.
Glass or chrome coffeemak
ers can be cleaned with baking
soda, a good detergent or a
special coffee stain remover,
dissolved in hot water. When
cleaning the vacuum type cof
fee maker, proceed as if brow
ing coffee. Do the same with a
percolator. However, be sure
to remove any aluminum parts
such as the basket and stem.
