THE COVINGTON NEWS
Be Specific With Specifications
By Doris Oglesby
Have you ever had the frustrat
ing experience of buying some
thing only to find later that it did
not have a certain feature you
thought it had?
This situation can easily arise
when you buy an appliance unless
you are careful. Most manufac
turers make many models of a
particular appliance and they
sometimes change or add to the
line in the middle of the year.
You have one sure way of
knowing just exactly what you are
buying. Manufacturers have
specification sheets, called “spec
sheets” by the people in the busi- 1
ness, on each model they make.
Some dealers have the sheets
available for their customers.
Some do not have them in quan
tity but they should have a cata
log which contains all of them.
You may ask to see and study
them.

TROOP 766
PORTERDALE—Troop 766
was honored by leading the
Flag Ceremony at the Annual
Ingathering of Girl Scouts and
Brownie Scouts from through
out Newton County at the E. L.
Ficquett Cafetorium on Friday
afternoon, March 15, at three
thirty. Flag bearers were Judy
Childs and Brenda House. Col
or Guards were Kathy Jo
Hayes and Barbara Mitchell.
Teresa Webb was the Color
Sergeant.
In observance of Girl Scout
Week, each person made her
personal contribution to the
International Friendship Fund
to help promote Girl Scouting
around the world.
Two young girls, high school
seniors from Atlanta, Georgia,
brought their own colored
slides which they made at the
World Encampment called
“Round-Up” at Button Bay,
Vermont last summer. They
narrated and told of the excit
ing experiences they had.
Group singing was led bv
Covington Scouts.
Iced cokes and individual
cup cakes embossed in green
with numerals “51" in celebra
tion of the fifty-first birthday
of Girl Scouts in America, were
served by a Senior Troop in
Covington. Many parents join
ed the girls for this rich ex
perience of sharing.
Members of Troop 766 who
attended were: Judy Childs,
Sylvia Hardegree, Kathy Jo
Hayes, Brenda Herring. Brenda
House, Barbara Mitchell, Jane
Mitchell, Karen O'Kelley, Lynn
Ragan, Teresa Walden, Teresa
Webb.
PORTERDALE BROWNIES
PORTERDALE—Nine Brow
nies met with their leaders,
Mrs. Fred Scarborough and
Miss Mae Hardman, on Satur
day morning, March 16, at ten
o’clock in the Girl Scout Room.
Gail Moon called the meeting
to order Susan Crowell check
ed the roll. Instead of paying
dues this week, each Brownie
contributed to the Internation
al Friendship Fund at the In
gathering which they attended
at the Ficquett School in Cov
ington on Friday afternoon,
March 15.
Elaine Moore read the Story
of Jesus’ Arrest. Each person
brought a Bible verse begin
ning with a “d”.
Because one of the Brownies,
Becky Lance, has moved away,
each Brownie was given writ
ing materials and wrote her a
personal letter which was mail
ed by Dianne Shaw.
While Mrs. Scarborough pre
pared delicious ice cold cokes
and cup cakes embossed with
51 to celebrate the Fifty-first
birthday of Girl Scouting in
America. Miss Hardman taught
some action games and songs.
Assignments were made for
the next meeting. Plans were
also discussed for an Easter
Egg Hunt on April 13.
The flag ceremony was a
special part of the meeting.
Those who attended the In
gathering on Friday were:
Wilda Capps. Sheila Crowe,
Nancy Crowell, Susan Crowell.
Colleen Davis, Nan Herring.
Brenda King, Gail Moon.

A specification sheet pictures
the appliance, gives the model
number (which is the important
number to know), gives exact di
mensions and specifications for
installation. It also gives a detail
ed description of t h e appliance.
For example, the specifications
for an electric range will list
general features such as construc
tion, finish, warranty and such
thing: as drawer handles, lights,
etc.
The control panel and back
splasher features will probably be
listed in one grouping, surface
features in another and the oven
or ovens in another.
Wattages for the different units
will be listed, indicating whether
or not some units are speedier
than others. You will also know
for sure whether or not there is
a convenience outlet which is
controlled by the oven timer.
The amount of electricity the
range uses when everything is
on will also be given and in case
you are moving the appliance,
shipping weight is listed.
An additional feature of most
specification sheets is that they
have close-up pictures of some
of the more important features.
If you would like to be specific
about your appliance purchases,
consult the specification sheets.
You won’t be sorry!
The U. S. Internal Revenue
Service advised that all returns
from individuals must include
appropriate social security
numbers.
