Spring Is "Busting Out All Over" at
Callaway Gardens at Pine Mountain
PINE MOUNTAIN—The de
lightful colors of Spring are
becoming more pronounced
every day at Callaway Gardens
here, making the worst winter
in recent Georgia history but a
memory.
Already the Kurume Azaleas
are in bloom in the area around
the mam entrance to The Gar
dena, and other native azaleas
and wildflowers are showing
color day by day.
Gardens Horticulture Dir
ector Fred Galle said the se
vere winter did some damage
to the ornamental, or hybrid
azaleas, but that the hardier
native azaleas are showing
much color.
One of the first of the ear
liest blooming azaleas found by
Callaway Gardens is the Pied
mont azalea, found in areas
from very moist woods to dry
sites, forming a large shrub up

Miss McQueen will welcome

All along the Five-Mile-

native azaleas planted back
from the road, and on the
banks of several of the small
lakes.
And in the Meadowlark
Flower Area, there is an Azalea
and Wildflower walking Trail,
which is a most delightful walk
and a particularly scenic spot
for picture taking. Also in this
area are the Daffodil Trail,
with still enough color left to
make a visit worthwhile, and
the Magnolia Arboretum,
where the Oriental Magnolias
are in especially good color this
year.
Here and there throughout
the Gardens, the dogwoods are
, beginning to show white and
the light green of the budding
hardwood trees gives a delicate
patina to Mother Nature’s
overall Canvas.
Garden Clubs are invited to
inquire about special tours of
Callaway Gardens, which may
be arranged complete with
guides and luncheon served
aboard "Cleopatra’s Barge” on
scenic Mountain Creek Lake.

News Notes
Elaine Allen called the meet
ing of the Prospect M. Y. F. to
order. Elaine welcomed those
who were present for this
meeting. Our president was in
charge of the program for the
evening worship service. The
program for the evening was
entitled, “My Church and the
World”. Effie Allen gave our
first reading which was, “The
Church, A Social Critic”. “The
Methodist Social Creed”, was
given by Elaine Allen and
Johnny Jolley gave us, “The
Church, A Cooperator”.
The youth are once again
preparing their Sunday after
noon visitation program. A
group met this past Sunday
afternoon for this purpose. The
M. Y. F. has prepared another
visitation for next Sunday. We
are hoping there will be more
present for this next meeting.
The fellowship of this program
is very important to the youth
of today, because those we
bring into the church when
young, will not depart from it.
Other business of the even

Unseasonably warm weather
the last few days has rushed
along the opening of flower
buds at Charleston’s Famous
Gardens. At Magnolia, Middle
ton and Cypress Gardens, the
early azaleas and wisteria are
now out; midseason azaleas
will be out within a very few
days. Full bloom estimate has
been revised to cover the per
iod March 27 - April 10.
By some miracle, the severe
winter has made no impression
on the bloom. The Charleston
area will have its most con
centrated color display in many
years.
The number of tourists flock
ing to Charleston is increasing
daily; they are much in evid

walking about the old sections
of the city.
