Hi! To everyone this beauti
ful Spring day. We really
know that spring is here for
this is "April Fool” day and
it means there is a new crop
of birthday and anniversary
celebrations coming up and so
to each one ‘‘many happy re
turns” to you.
Mrs. Phil Standard has been
quite ill and has been a pa
tient at Emory Hospital. She
is now at home to the delight
of her family and friends. Oth
ers who may be sick, we send
good wishes for your recovery.

Fashion Show and Tea.
Mrs. Clark Hawk and son,

the weekend with Miss Miller.

ing.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Standard
were hosts Sunday to the Nor
ton family reunion. At the noon
hour a picnic lunch was en
joyed on the lawn of the
Standard home. The occasion
assembled relatives and de
scendants of Mr. Will Norton.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Harvey
of Tallapoosa were the week
end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joe
Harvey.
Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Bailey
and children of Atlanta were
dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Doyle Bailey and Miss Brenda

ily visited their parents, the

his spring holidays with his

Roy Gaither
Member of Battle
Honor Guard
MANNHEIM, GERMANY—
Army PFC Roy Gaither, son
of Henney Gaither, Mansfield,
Ga., is a member of the Ist
Battle Group Honor Guard of
the Bth Division’s 18th Infan
try, which recently took part
in ceremonies for the battle
group's change of command at
Mannheim, Germany.
The honor guard executed
the manual of arms in honor of
the new commander.
Gaither, aissgned to the
group’s Company B, entered
the Army in February 1962.
He completed basic training at
Fort Chaffee, Ark., and arrived
overseas in July 1962.

Newborn

Our town was shocked by the ;
sudden death of Luther Polk. We |
extend our deepest sympathy to
his family.
Walker Walton had surgery last
week at Newton County Hospital.
We hope that he will soon be
home and well again.
Several people from here at
tended the cancer fund barbecue
at Mansfield, Wednesday.
H. A. Pannell continues ill in ,
an Atlanta Hospital. We hope he
will soon be well.
Mr. and Mrs. Walker Robertson
and children of Ellaville spent the
weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Char
lie Robertson.
Mrs. Ernest Holcombe’s grand
sons visited her over the weekend
and attended Sunday School with
her here. We welcome all visit
ors.

Davis visited H. A. Pannell and j
Luther Polk at Emory Hospital,
Friday afternoon.

In Atlanta Show
Three Newton County 4-H Club
members will enter steers in the
16th annual Georgia Livestock
Exposition in Atlanta next week,
County Agent Ed Hunt announced
today.
They are: Kathy Hitchcock,
Mansfield; Mary Hazel Polk, New
born; and George Lazenby, Mans-

Mr. Hunt said the local 4-H
members and their show animals
will arrive in Atlanta Monday
morning, April 8.
Jack Phillips of Pennsylvania
State University will begin judging
the steers at 8:30 Tuesday. The
selection of the grand champion
and reserve champion of the
show will begin at 11:30 a. m. A
fitting and showing contest is sche
duled for 1:30 Tuesday afternoon.
The Newton County youngsters
will join 4-H and FFA members
J from throughout the state at the
Dinkier Plaza hotel at 6 p. m.
Tuesday for the annual cattle
। show dinner. They will be guests
of Atlanta businessmen.
The sale of Georgia Livestock
Extxisition animals will begin at
9 a m. Wednesday. April 10, un
der the supervision of the live
stock executive committee of the
Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber of Commerce is
one of six sponsors of the Expo
: sition, the largest livestock show
'in the state. Other sponsors are:

According to Mr. Hunt, the At
lanta event will climax many
months of hard work by 4-H Club '
and FFA members all over the
state. Four-H ers alone will enter
138 animals in the show this year.
They represent 29 counties.
“Every youngster entering the
show will be shooting for the grand
champion award, Mr. Hunt said.
1 “Os course, only one will make it.”
The county agent continued that,
in addition to the top award, scores
of other prizes will be available
to boys and girls who have done
a good job of feeding, fitting, and
: getting their animals ready for the
■ show.
In addition to the regular pre
miums that will be awarded, the
4 H and FFA members will have
an opportunity to compete for ten
special awards.
Mr. Hunt said the Georgia Live
stock Exposition this year is dedi
cated “with gratitude and affec-

tion” to Mr. Elfred S. Papy. “Mr.
Papy served as president of the
Southeastern Fair Association
from 1954 until his retirement a
few months before his death on
July 17, 1962. His leadership made
it possible to get the 19© Expo
sition underway when a change in
sponsorship became necessary. He
worked untiringly toward creating
and understanding between the
people of Atlanta and its sur
rounding agricultural area. w '•
