NICKLAUS MAY DOMINATE FUTURE MASTERS
Jack Nicklaus now adds another major golf title to his
collection with the 1963 Masters under his belt. He had won
the U. S. Open and World Series of Golf titles. At 23 years
of age he may become the all-time Masters champion in
years to come.
Newton Rams will host the Forsyth County Bulldogs
tomorrow (Friday) on Legion Field at 4 o’clock. Monday,
April 15, the Jackson nine will visit Covington . . . Atlanta
Crackers are at Ponce de Leon Park in Atlanta through
April 22. Home opener for the Crackers will be with Syracuse
on Tuesday, April 16. Toronto comes in for two on April
18-19 and then Rochester for four tilts.
Remember when Waite Hoyt pitched in the big leagues?
Well, he’s been broadcasting major league baseball games
for 21 years. Now, do you care to remember? He hurled in
the big-time for 21 years . . . Craig Wood once shot an open
ing round of 88 in the Masters at Augusta. The very next
round he posted a67 —a difference of 21 strokes .. . And
by the way, Sam Snead at age 51, just about won the 1963
Masters. He finished two strokes back of Nicklaus.
University of Kentucky may go after Colored high school
players for their Wildcat future basketball team. Coach
Ronald Bradley says that Coach Rupp told him that the
three top high school players they hope to recruit are
Negroes . . . University of Georgia has signed a Louisville
high player, Tom Duggan of the Kentucky State Champion
Seneca High School.
Six persons out of 100 are lefthanded . . . Paul Waner,
a member of Baseball’s Hall of Fame, is now penniless. He
recently said that he doesn’t have money to buy his clothes
. . . Sports figures are often plagued with surgery for kid
ney stones. Bing Crosby has had four operations for the
stones . . . Joe Garagiola, who will help telecast baseball
games during the summer under the sponsorship of the
Hartford Insurance Company over NBC-TV, sums up the
1963 pennant races thusly:
“From all this wheeling and dealing and the winter and
spring muscle-flexing exercises, which are now more than
a month old, a quick sum-up of the two leagues would be
this:
“The Giants will be threatened by at least five rivals —
Los Angeles, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and either
Milwaukee or Philadelphia. The Phils are being given a
good chance to dump the Braves into the second division.
“The Tigers are regarded as the likeliest to fight it out
with the Yankees, but the champions can't afford to let
down.
“Even a slight improvement on the part of the Twins,
Angels, White Sox, Indians and Orioles could make it easier
for somebody to slip in the back door and throttle the proud
and potent tenants of the House that Ruth built.”

Rams Post First Win of Year
Over Avondale High 3 to 1
Doing Bledsoe and Freeman
Batchelor led the Newton
County baseball Rams to their
opening victory of the 1963
season Monday on Legion
Field as the NCHS nine
downed the Avondale Blue
Devils 3-1.
Bledsoe hurled 7-hit ball
and Batchelor banged out two
hits in three plate appearances.
Ringing doubles in the game
by Terry Rutledge and Billy
Shepherd helped Coach Ron
ald Bradley’s team remain un
defeated in two seasons of
regular action. The team last
year won 11 straights during
the regular campaign. They
came out second in the State
AA tournament at Thomaston.
Nowton’s team jumped off
to a one-run lead in the first
inning as Bledsoe grounded
out with the bases loaded to
plate with the first run of the
game. The Rams added their
other counters in the third
frame.

COVINGTON, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, APRIL 11. 1963
Recreation 'Rips'
Old Conyers St.
Gymnasium Site
At 7:30 Monday night, the
old gym on Conyers Street was
the focal point for the first in
a series of four Recreational
Workshops for 4-H boys and
girls, adult leaders and Exten
sion Agents.
Mr. M. L. (Rip) Van Winkle,
Recreation Specialist from the
University of Georgia, launch
ed the first session of folk dan
cing (square dancing) with his
famous style of teaching. He
has been specializing in re
creational teaching for many
years and has truly become a
master teaching old and young
alike to “do-si-do” and “pro
menade your partner”.
There were approximately
20 4-H’ers and 10 adult leaders
on hand for the evening's class.
Mrs. Sara Groves, Extension
Agent, introduced all those pre
sent to Mr. Van Winkle, who
managed to put everyone com
pletely at ease with a brief
talk before the instructions be
gan. Mr. Rip furnishes the
music which is the authentic
tone of the folk dancing num
bers he is teaching. All who at
tended had a really marvelous
time and are looking forward
to the next class on Monday
night, April 15th, 7:30 at the
old gym.
Ed Hunt, County Agent, was
unable to attend this first class
due to the fact that he is with
4-H’ers in Atlanta at the At
lanta Steer Show. Anyone who
wishes to come to watch the
recreation workshops, are cor
dially invited to do so, but all
vacancies have been filled as
far as the actual classes go.
Those who are being taught
in these classes plan to teach
others in the future and will be
the leaders in the program.
