Easter weekend was saddened
in Salem by the automobile acci
dent almost in front of Salem
Camp Ground Tabernacle on Fri
day night, which claimed the
live! of two young men. The
Farmer - Parks accident about
eleven-thirty Friday night was
the most tragic automobile acci
dent to happen in this co m
munlty'a history and we all join
friends of the two victims i n

Methodist Church and Canaan

casion was in honor of his grand

christened Sunday morning.

friends from Atlanta and is in
Norfolk, Va. on a sightseeing trip.
Mrs. White is visiting her dau
ghter, Mrs Joel Burns in De

on Spring Holidays.
Mr. and Mrs. Ruel Williams of
Decatur visited Miss Leitha Cow

The Doyle Baileys Plaster guests
were Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Bailey
and children. Miss Laverne Brice

Mr. and Mrs. Manson Miller
were hosts to the Dial family on
Easter Sunday, when all the Dial
girls and their families gathered
at their home for a picnic
dinner.
The Dr. J. E. Taylor Jr. fami
ly of Atlanta spent Easter with
their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Douglas Yancey.
Mr. and Mrs. Ezld Daniels of
East Point were guests of Mrs.
Vallie Chambers. Mrs. Chambers
has been very sick, but is im
proved at this writing to the de
light of all.
Mrs. Raymond Thompson has
been a patient at Newton Hospi
tal, having suffered a heart at
tack. She is improved and i s
being wished a complete recovery
by her many friends.
Little Emily Underwood has just
about recovered from he r tonsi
lectomy.
Mrs. Al Hicks and children of
Covington visited Mr. and Mrs.
Clifford Savage on Fri.
Two new homes are now under
construction here in Salem. The
Franklin Greys beautiful new
home next door to Salem Metho
dist Church is going to add
great beauty to that section of
Salem. The Watts home that is
being constructed near Plane View
will give the Salem reporter some
more new neighbors. All these
people are already Salem resi
dents. therefore, I won’t have to
say “Welcome neighbor”, but will
say we are all happy to see new
and beautiful homes going up
in our community.
Mrs. Jule Smith spent the week
end in Atlanta with her children,
the Pete Smiths and attended
church at Wienca Road Baptist
Church.

missioners Convention in Sav
annah.

State Meeting
Four members of the Cov
ington arid Newton Chapter of
Future Homemakers of Ameri
ca will attend the State FHA
Convention in Atlanta, April
25-26, and 27. The group will
leave early Friday morning and
will return Saturday afternoon.
Those attending will be San
dra Hodges, Mary Jane Odum,
Jane Coggin and Arlene Mar
tin. Accompanying the girls
will be Mis. McKenzie and Miss
Tanner, FHA Advisors.
Although this is the first
Convention the girls have at
tended they eagerly anticipate
the date. Sandra, Mary Jane,
and Mrs. McKenzie will stay at
the Piedmont, while Jane. Ar
lene, and Miss Tanner will be
at the Peachtree on Peachtree.
The theme of the Covention
this year is “Future Home
makers - Education Unfolds
New Horizons”. Governor San
ders, who will be the speaker
at the annual banquet on Fri
day night (April 26) and who
has expressed his concern for
better ediucational opportuni
ties, will find plenty of “food
for thought” in the theme.

lar, office of information, State
Department of Education and
Sophia Svestka, Czechoslovak
ia, are to be other speakers.
Voting delegates will be Ar
lene and Sandra. They will be
responsible for casting the bal
lot for their group for the
1963-64 president. Candidates
are Janetha Anne Robinson,
Hogansville and Sara Jane
Harp, Inman.
Jane Coggin and Sandra
Hodges will attend the Presi
dent's Breakfast on Saturday.
Over 1200 representatives
from 325 high schools in Geor
gia will attend the Convention.
They will be accompanied by
their high school home eco
nomics teachers. The Future
Homemaker program is a part
of the Vocational Home Eco
nomics Division of the State
Department of Education. Mr.
Jack P. Nix is State Director
: of Vocational Education, Mrs.
Howard Tumlin is State Super
visor of Home Economics and
Mrs. J. Mac Barber, Athens, is
State Advisor.
All in all, it looks like an
exciting three day period in
the lives of these girls and one
they will talk about and re
member long after the final
curtain is drawn on State Con
, vention.

86th birthday Friday. Mrs. Ruby
