Storing Winter Cothcs I <
Valuable winter clothing 1
.should find a good resting place ■
for the summer. The storage of 1
winter clothes for protection 1
from damaging moths is the <
job at hand.
When you undertake this 1
chore, and you shouldn’t wait I
j too long, be sure woolens are (
clean before you store them. If I
you are storing woolen gar
ments in a closet, spray a five- <
oercent D-D-T solution on :
closet walls, baseboards, floors |
and other surfaces. These are 1
the spots where insects will 1
come into contact with chemi- 1
cal deposit after it has evapo- i
rated. The application is usu- <
zll.v effective for several weeks. ।
Georgia entomologists say '
that D-D-T has no fumigating
effect. This means that the
larve in untreated clothing
won’t be killed. When treating ।
the clothing, spray lightly all '
over the fabric on both sides ।
with the same five-percent D-
D-T solution. You should stay
away from fire when spraying :
an oil spray.
If you are storing clothing '
articles in a trunk, chest or ।
wooden box, scatter about a
pound of moth flakes between
the folds of clothing. It should
be placed between sheets of
thin, clean paper. It’s import
ant in this type storage to keep
the storage unit, closed tightly.
It really boils down to this:
Make sure winter clothing is
clean and then store it properly
so as to have good winter cloth
ing next year. It’s another way
to save money in the household.
The clothes will look nicer next
winter too.

contributing and responsible
adults. The question of the best
way to teach these virtues is
of real concern to parents who
are often unsure of the proper
course.
A family-life specialist of the
Georgia Cooperative Extension
Service recently outlined some
of the new ideas concerning
better ways with children.
Ideas about proper child care
and training have changed
some throughout the agea, she
points out. Intensive study over
the past 40 years has provided
much new knowledge of how
children grow and develop.
New insight and understanding
of the emotional needs and
difficulties of young children
have been learned
Knowledge of new insights
have led to new ways of think
ing about children. It has be
come clear, for example, that
certain old ways of treating
children lead to trouble in later
years. Such an old way invol
ves an old saying that "a child
should be seen and not heard.”
Modern day thinking has put
emphasis on the problems of
children rather than the prob
lem child. The term ‘‘concern”
has replaced the term "prob
lem” in many areas. The new
approach assumes that what
ever a child says or does is
meaningful. It reveals his per
sonality or his strivings, his
needs and sometimes his diffi
culties.
Some forms of naughty be
havior was once believed to be
deliberate on the part of the
child. Today's ideas believe
that they express needs, budrens
that are too heavy, unresolved
conflicts, emotional disturb
ances and other needs with
which the parent can help,
Today, we have learned not
only to love children but to
provide sympathetic underst
anding also. We have also
learned that parental love is
needed most when the child is
least lovable.
It may be said that the par
ents’ desire for their child may
be fulfilled when the child is
provided with love, acceptance,
protection, independence, guid
ance, control, faith and secur
ity.
Choosing Calories Wisely
The way you choose your
calories can have a great in
fluence on your health and
well-being. This is especially
true for the weight-watchers
who are really concerned with
counting calories.
The caloric value of foods'
should not be counted just as .

numbers. The other nutrients,
proteins, minerals and vitamins
are important factors to be re
j membered. Some foods are re
| farred to as containing “empty
; calories” because they contain
very little food value other than
calories. Most candies, soft
drinks and salad dressings and
some desserts belong to the
foods which are calorie rich
, and nutrition poor.
Almost all meats, dairy food>
especially skimmed milk, fruit
and vegetables? are foods that
are high in nutritional values
and low in calories. When pre
paring fruits and vegetables, .t
should be remembered that a
great number of calories can be
unconsciously added by the use
of fatty seasonings and dress
ings.
Calorie counters, remember
it is more important that you
eat three small, well-balanced
meals a day than to choose
foods that contain only caloric
Calories do count. However,
it is the nutrients received with
the calories that should be
counted.
Thia Week's Tip
Your picnic menu, regardless
; of the type picnic you plan,
should be .simple. Fresh air
stimulates appetites, so a few
foods in ample quantity is the
rule. Avoid creamed dishes, fish
and meat salads, cream and
custard pies which spoil quick
■ ly. Make outdoor meals as nut
ritious and appetizing as indoor
ones. Decide on the main dish
and plan the rest of the meal
. around it.
i TIGHTNESS ESSENTIAL
Because of the extensive use
of air conditioning, homes
, should be tighter than they
, once were.
. A dwelling will stay snug if
pre-shrunk lumber is used for
| the structural framework. Ac
. cording to the Southern Pine
। Association, the pre-shrinking
process gives an advantage of
! as much as 400 percent in the
( ultimate nail holding power of
. a structure.
